Japanese battleship Ise - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ise (伊勢) was the Imperial Japanese Navy's first Ise-class battleship, and laid at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries shipyard in Kobe on May 5, 1915, launched on November 12, 1916, and completed on December 1, 1917.
She was originally planned to be the third Fuso-class battleship, but problems including weak armament and protection forced a redesign and new classification.
Ise was later converted to a carrier battleship — the aft turrets were removed and replaced with a hangar, deck and catapult.

However, the vulnerability of carriers to traditional battleships was quickly illustrated by the sinking of HMS ''Glorious'' by German battlecruisers during the Norwegian campaign in 1940.
The eclipse of the battleship as the primary component of a fleet was clearly illustrated by the sinking of the largest battleship ever built, ''Yamato'', by carrier-borne aircraft in 1945.
Starting with the ''Midway'' class, American carriers had grown so large that it was no longer practical to continue the hangar deck as strength deck concept, and all subsequent American carriers have the flight deck as the strength deck, leaving only the island as superstructure.

 Battle of Guadalcanal
The fact that the battleship was apparently closer to Guadalcanal at this time would indicate that the B-17's followed the torpedo planes.
They climbed to about 5,000 feet and attacked on both beams of the battleship, which lay about 10 miles north of Savo and was practically dead in the water with her bow headed north.
The convoy was preceded by a separate group of combatant vessels, which were reported as (a) 2 battleships, 1 light cruiser, and 11 destroyers, and as (b) 1 battleship, 1 carrier, 2 heavy cruisers, and 4 destroyers.

Carrier battleship is created by the Imperial Japan Naval force to partially compensate for the loss of carrier strength at Midway.
The Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 placed strict limits on the tonnages of battleships and battlecruisers for the major naval powers after World War I, as well as limits not only on the total tonnage for carriers, but also an upper limit on 27,000 tonnes for each ship.
To militate against the expensive connotations of the term "aircraft carrier", the new Invincible Class carriers were originally designated "through deck cruisers" and were initially helicopter only craft to operate as escort carriers.
