Gunma is the northwestern-most prefecture of the Kanto, and is mostly mountainous in the north, with more of the population concentrated in the southern half facing Saitama Prefecture.
On January 23, 2006, the municipalities of Gunma, Kurabuchi and Misato from Gunma District and the town of Shin from Tano District merged into the expanded city of Takasaki.
The city of Takasaki is scheduled to merge with the town of Haruna from Gunma District on October 1, 2006.

The Shima Ori(stripe weave) in which "Kasuri Ito" is used to give stripes on the cloth, was first produced in early Meiji Era and given the name of "Meisen"around 1880.
History: Ashikaga Ginu(silk) was produced in this district in the Heian Period(794-1185) and used for flag cloths in the Muromachi Period(1333-1568).
Ashikaga was famous for producing "Meisen" rivaling Isesaki, Chichibu and Hachioji: "Bunka Meisen" was specifically popular.

The man, who is in his 30s and believed to belong to an Islamic extremist group, entered Japan on a valid Bosnia-Herzegovina passport and was expelled from the country in 2000 for overstaying his visa, the NPA said.
During his stay in Japan, he lived with the 33-year-old French man, Lionel Dumont, in Isesaki in Gunma Prefecture.

After a few minutes she started crying; it turned out that she had gone to see that movie with her little friends for her tenth birthday party in 1929 at the cinema in Isesaki, Gunma Ken, her first ever moving picture.
