  isetta history
BMW introduced the restyled Isetta Moto Coupe DeLuxe (sliding-window Isetta) in October 1956 with the larger 298 cc motor for export.
BMW began exporting Isettas to the U.S. (to a lukewarm response) in 1957.
Overall, the Isetta was successful enough to encourage BMW to produce the 600, which shared the Isetta’s front door and a motorcycle engine (600 cc) and the more car-like 700 (also powered by a motorcycle engine).

My Isetta was in a sorry state when purchased, I neither had the time, skills nor finances to restore my car to a roadworthy condition, so a light cosmetic restoration was undertaken instead.
The underside, including the wheel arches and engine compartment (the engine came separately) were subjected to much rubbing down with a wire brush and abrasive paper then painted with either smoothrite or anti rust primer.
After rubbing down the exterior of the car it was painted pastel yellow with white on part of the door.

The Velam Isetta used a 236 cc two stroke engine, a convertible version of the Velam Isetta was sold from 1957 and a luxury version was introduced in 1958 named the Velam Ecrin.
Interestingly although the BMW Isetta sold far better than the Velam Isetta many consider Velam's design to be superior.

the main advantage of the isetta was that it was affordable as well as connected to motorcycles which were extremely popular during the 50ies.
however, the round shape of the isetta also had a functional character: the car was not only advertised as a lifestyle vehicle but also as a kind of “shopping bag on wheels” that offered optimum storing space in proportion to its relatively small size.
as custom-built versions, the isetta was also produced as a convertible with a removable roof and as a truck with a detachable panel.

globeandmail.com: Smart car follows in footsteps of BMW's Isetta
The egg-shaped Isetta was born in the aftermath of the Second World War when money, materials and fuel were scarce, one of a number of designs from makers such as Messerschmitt, Heinkel, Dornier, Gogomobile, Trojan and Scootacar.
The original Isetta appeared in 1953 and its most unusual feature was the hinged front section (perhaps inspired by a refrigerator door, one wag suggests) that allowed occupants to step into the two-seat interior.
The original Isetta was a little too crude for BMW, however, and it was cosmetically upgraded and mechanically improved, mainly by replacing the two-stroke engine with a 12-hp, 250-cc four-stroke motorcycle unit of its own manufacture.

The Isetta was one of the true "bubble cars" having a bubble shaped body that was made from steel and welded to a separate tubular chassis and like its 4-wheeler counterpart it used the BMW 298cc 4-stroke engine.
