Abner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
By reading Ishbaal's name as "Ishbosheth" later Hebrew editors have disguised Saul's dedication of his son to Baal and rendered the name of Ishbaal as "shameful." David, who was accepted as king by Judah alone, was meanwhile reigning at Hebron, and for some time war was carried on between the two parties.
The only engagement between the rival factions which is told at length is noteworthy, inasmuch as it was preceded by an encounter at Gibeon between twelve chosen men from each side, in which the whole twenty-four seem to have perished (2 Samuel 2:12).
At length Ishbaal lost the main prop of his tottering cause by remonstrating with Abner for marrying Rizpah, one of Saul's concubines, an alliance which, according to contemporary notions, implied pretensions to the throne (compare 2 Samuel 16:21 and following).

Soon after, first Abner and then Ishbaal were murdered, both crimes perpetrated without prior knowledge of David and invoking his wrath upon the killers.
He even sent the demand to Ishbaal, with a reminder of the perilous mission – the pride price of Philistinian foreskins he had undertaken to win her.
Ishbaal actually acceded to this demand, and had Michal sent back to David, with the forsaken Paltiel, wailing and lamenting, following her part way back to her first husband.

Ishbaal ruled as king over the Hebrews’ northern kingdom, Israel, which covered the Samaria hill country.
Ishbaal was assassinated by two of his army officers but there was still a legitimate heir to the throne, Jonathan’s son Mephibaal, Saul’s grandson, who was crippled in both feet (2 Samuel 9:13).
Although Mephibaal was the heir to the throne, it’s unlikely that he could ever have reigned because it seems the Hebrews, new to king-making, had adopted the Phoenician rule that kings had to be without blemish.

David  Returns To The Land Of YAHWEH - YHWH Sword History
Up in the north, Abner, Saul's army commander, defeated at Gilboa, was obliged to cross the Yarden to escape the continuing pressure from the Philistines; with what remained of his troops he settled at Mahanaim (the Two Camps) on the left bank of the river.
Thus while David made a triumphant return to the Promised land to be proclaimed king of Yahudah, Ishbaal, the real heir of the dead king, was obliged to flee to the other side of the Yarden to be an exiled king.
There were two kings: Ishbaal, son of Saul, king of Yisrael; David, the former shepherd from Bethlehem, the outlaw and guerilla fighter, king of Yahudah.

He and Abner had earlier had a disagreement, and in addition, perhaps Joab felt insecure in his position as David's right-hand man. Joab secretly met Abner and killed him, thus getting rid of a serious rival.
The Hebrew text gives Ishbaal's name as Ishbosheth, which means "man of shame." Based on 1 Chronicles 8:33 and 9:39 we know his name originally to have been Ishbaal, meaning "man of Baal." The name was changed to eliminate the divine element Baal and at the same time to disparage this pretender to the throne.

 THE EMBARRASSMENT OF BIBLICAL CHRONOLOGY
Thus, King Saul's son is named Ishbosheth in the book of Samuel, but Ishbaal in the book of Chronicles.
Ishbosheth means "Man of Shame," and clearly was not the name he was called in life (to his face, anyway); while Ishbaal means "Man of the Lord," and doubtless was his real name.
It would be a mistake to think, however, that because the writer of Samuel has altered Ishbaal's name, therefore no such person as Ishbaal ever existed!
