  2 SAMUEL CHAPTER 3
The reproof was given because Abner, by his action, had presumed upon royal rights, for in the ancient Orient claim to the harem was claim to the throne, the suspicion thus being that he aspired to be king.
Ishbosheth owed position, kingdom, everything to Abner, who seems to have been on his side merely out of loyalty for Saul; but there was no personal bond between them, and Abner regarded the charge flung into his face as an insult.
And Ishbosheth, who would not have been able to refuse the demand of David even if he had been so inclined, sent and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel, the son of Laish, the man who seems to have taken her in good faith, 1 Sam.

They stabbed him in the stomach: Ishbosheth didn't gain any real loyalty among his troops; they were only loyal to him when they thought he was strong and had a chance to keep the throne of Saul.

The Skeptical Review - Turkel on the "House of Saul"
This implies that Ishbosheth had been born to Saul's wife, and that conclusion is supported by texts that mention that Saul had a concubine named Rizpah, whose sons by Saul were named but did not include Ishbosheth.
Let's notice that Ishbosheth did not say, "Why have you gone into my mother?" He asked instead why Abner had gone into his "father's concubine." This would indicate that if Ishbosheth had been illegitimately born, Rizpah was not his mother.
The fact that Ishbosheth was never listed as the offspring of any such relationship but was twice included in listings of Saul's sons is a very strong implication that Ishbosheth was just as legitimate as Jonathan, Malchishua, and Abinadab, who were listed as Saul's sons in the genealogies quoted above.
