Sogo Ishii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sogo Ishii (石井聰互 Ishii Sōgo) (born 1957) is a film director from Japan known for his striking visuals and sometimes outlandish subject matter.
A spectularly-photographed, revisionist retelling of the legends of Saito Musashibo Benkei and Yoshitsune, it recast the two as mortal enemies destined to clash on the bridge named Gojoe.
Ishii also directed Electric Dragon 80.000 V in the same year.

In Sogo Ishii's world--a place where road warriors rule the earth, and filmmaking means never having to stick to a story--whatever doesn't kill you makes you bonkers.
Ishii likes his movies visceral, and he's more than happy to drip a dollop of sonic saliva directly into your ear.
Born in Fukuoka in 1957, Ishii's college days at Nihon University seem, in synopsis, as berserk as early films: he founded something called Kyoei-sha (Crazy Film Group) in 1976, his freshman year, just as he was completing his first mini-feature, an energetic super 8 knockoff called Panic High School.

 Midnight Eye interview: Sogo Ishii
But even if it's a flawed film, there are moments in it that are pure Sogo Ishii.
One of the pioneers of Japan's influential 8mm filmmaking scene of the late 1970s, Sogo Ishii is still far from being given his proper due outside his home country.
In the following interview we talk to Ishii about his early days as a filmmaker and his close ties with Japan's punk scene of the 1970s and 80s, in which he was a pivotal figure despite never touching a musical instrument.

In Japan, Sogo Ishii is often referred to as a punk filmmaker, a reflection of both how he entered the industry and the content of much of his output.
In fact Sogo Ishii did indeed play guitar in a punk band before realising his true calling at the age of nineteen when he produced his first full-length amateur film, Panic High School, filmed on an 8mm camera while he was still a student in 1978.
Sogo Ishii fills the film with with remarkable and stylishly edited fl-and-white imagery, but more than half of the experience comes from the film's explosive, hyper-real soundtrack.

Director Ishii Sogo is on an excellent roll in terms of producing top-notch Japanese cinema.
Ishii may be trying to follow Kitamura's precedent and has here created three 20 minute vignettes using an over-lapping theme and location.
During these all-out scenes of the fleeing character, Ishii utilizes experimental camera techniques in an attempt to stylistically capture the chaos of the moment.

In 1984, Ishii directed his most widely-acclaimed movie to that point, The Crazy Family, the title of which literally translates to The Back-Firing Family (or more crudely, the fucked-up family).
In 1995 Ishii made August in the Water, which dealt with a teenage girl gaining supernatural powers after a mishap and using same to better understand her purpose in life.
In 2000 Ishii made Gojoe, a samurai epic that combined both his original hyperkinetic filmmaking approach (violence, wild editing and camera movements) with his newer, more stately concerns (man's place in the universe).

Sogo Ishii has remained criminally underserved by DVD in America, with only his so-so samurai epic Gojoe receiving a proper release until now.
Ishii was essentially the Jean-Luc Godard of the Japanese punk scene, creating cyberpunk masterpieces that focused on bosozoku biker gangs, punk rockers and freaks of all kinds.
Be warned - Ishii was a devotee of famous ero-guro (erotic-grotesque) author Edogawa Rampo (say it quickly to see his literary influences) and his works are not for the faint of heart.

Sogo Ishii's hyperkinetic opus is loud, fast, and gleefully over the top, recalling such vintage Shinya Tsukamoto efforts as Tetsuo: Iron Man. Both films are shot in fl-and-white, feature breakneck editing, and concern themes of urban dwellers evolving into something not quite human.
But as similar as the two films may be in terms of aesthetics and running time, Electric Dragon drags in spite of its trim, 50-minute length.
In spite of this, Ishii fashions some brilliantly weird imagery, wildly inventive sequences, and pungent narration such as "He conducts electricity!
