Kazuo Ishikawa, 67, was arrested 43 years ago and charged with the murder of a 16-year-old female high school student in a case that became known as the Sayama Incident.
Ishikawa admitted to the charges and was given the death penalty by the Urawa District Court in 1964.
Ishikawa says he was told by police officers during interrogation that he would be released in 10 years if he admitted to committing the crime.

The central and prefectural governments had said during the trial that Juki Net allowed their administrative bodies to be more efficient and that the information was fully protected.
The Kanazawa District Court said the network violates privacy rights under the Constitution and ordered Ishikawa Prefecture to remove the plaintiffs' data from the system.

KANAZAWA, Japan, Dec. 11 (AP) - (Kyodo)— The Nagoya High Court's Kanazawa branch dismissed residents' demands Monday to protect their privacy from the national residency registry network, overturning a lower court ruling that their involuntary registration was unconstitutional.
The latest decision, reversing the Kanazawa District Court's first- ever decision in May last year judging such registration unconstitutional, came 11 days after the Osaka High Court overrode a ruling rejecting plaintiffs' similar demands.
