In the Book of Mormon, Lehi was an ancient prophet who lived around 600 BC.
Lehi's sons Nephi and Laman are said to have established themselves and to have founded Israelite nations: the Nephites and the Lamanites.
The Book of Mormon relates that during his family's journey to the Americas and before his death, Lehi gave important teachings to his children and their posterity that were recorded by Nephi on metallic plates that were later used in compiling the Book of Mormon.

For LDS children, the Book of Mormon is a source of stories and heroes to equal those of the Bible—Joseph in Egypt, Daniel in the lions´ den, the faithful Ruth, and brave Queen Esther.
In 1832, two and one-half years after the book was published, the word of the Lord warned the Saints that they had treated the revelations too lightly and had neglected to "remember the new covenant, even the Book of Mormon" (D&C 84:57).
The title page was used as the description of the Book of Mormon on the federal copyright application filed June 11, 1829, with R. Lansing, Clerk of the District Court of the United States for the Northern District of New York, at Albany.

The Book of Mormon was recorded by ancient prophets in the American continent who were from a branch of Israel.
The Book of Jubilees claims, however, that “the Lord sent a mighty wind against the tower and overthrew it upon the Earth.” The Jubilees is an apocryphal or noncanonical book that is outside of the Bible.
The coming forth of the Book of Mormon is a sign that the Lord has begun to gather Israel and to fulfill his covenants (3 Nephi 29).

The Book of Mormon employs the expressions "to go down" and "to go up" exactly as the Hebrews and Egyptians did with reference to the location of Jerusalem, and thus clearly establishes that Lehi's property lay somewhere in the country and not within the walls of Jerusalem.
But strangely enough, the name in the Book of Mormon that has brought the most derision on that book, and caused the greatest embarrassment to the Latter-day Saints, especially among those holders of the priesthood who have borne it among the children of men, is the simple and unpretentious Alma.

In translating the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith simply used the most appropriate word that he was familiar with and that people reading the Book of Mormon could relate to in describing the houses of worship refered to in the scriptures.

Here Mormon specifically states that he hid up all the records in the hill Cumorah EXCEPT "these few plates" he gave to his son Moroni, which were the gold plates that the Book of Mormon was translated from.

Chiasmus in the Book of Mormon is particularly impressive when we realize that, with some minor exceptions, the chiasmus in the Old and New Testaments have not survived translation.
While Joseph Smith translated the Book of Mormon into his own words, it's obvious that both the choice and order of those words were frequently very specifically controlled by the source from which he received the inspired understanding of the sense of the record.

The Book of Mormon tells us that because of the rebellion of the elder sons, that Nephi, the youngest of the four sons of Lehi, became the ruler, both during their travels and after they arrived in the land of promise, which is the new land of Joseph (America).
One closing thought concerning the moral teachings of the book may not be out of place, because prejudice has prevented many honest, intelligent people from examining the book for themselves, feeling that a book that has attracted so much opposition must of necessity teach something bad.

In the Book of Mormon, Ishmael is the righteous friend of the prophet Lehi in Jerusalem.
The daughters of Ishmael marry the sons of Lehi, but the sons of Ishmael join Laman and Lemuel in their rebellion against Nephi.
Ishmael dies in the wilderness, and is buried at Nahom.
