		Ishpeming is a city in Marquette County in the U.S. state of Michigan.
		Ishpeming Township is located to the northwest of the city.
		Ishpeming is considered the birth place of downhill ski jumping in the United States and is the home to the National Ski Hall of Fame.

		With a current population of about 6,600, Ishpeming stands out from all other iron-mining towns because it developed as the Upper Peninsula operations headquarters for Cleveland-Cliffs Iron, one of the country's biggest iron-mining companies for decades.
		It too was closed as new technology made it cheaper to mine the lower-grade ore bodies closer to the surface and concentrate the ore in easily shippable taconite pellets - a process visitors can see at the Tilden Mine tour, in summer by reservation only.
		Ishpeming's downtown is made invisible to U.S. 41 traffic by the railroad embankment built by Cleveland Cliffs Mining not too terribly long ago.

		To remember the history of the hill, which is being repossessed by Cleveland Cliffs, Inc., Michigan History presents this unique photo album of past and present ski jumping competitions.

		The Cliffs Shaft Mine in Ishpeming in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has an important place in the history of the Lake Superior and national iron mining industries and the mine site survives as the best preserved, most complete, example of an underground iron mining site on the Marquette Iron Range and in the entire Upper Peninsula.
		Although first settled by the French in the seventeenth century the western two-thirds of the peninsula had not even been part of the Michigan territory until it was added to Michigan as compensation for the loss of the "Toledo Strip" when the final boundary between Michigan and Ohio was drawn.
		Houghton had already spent several season in the field in the region and suspected there were iron deposits as well as the copper reserves he had described in his reports for 1841 and 1842 and directed the survey parties to do magnetic readings at the compass stations as the proceeded across the peninsular.
