Slant Magazine - Film Comment Selects 2006
A quietly shocking moment during its second half wakes the film from its torpor but carries an insulting implication—that the daughter needed to be punished in order to prove the father right.
The film gets by for a while because of its relatively exotic Kyrgyzstanian locale (a tract house suburb nestled between rolling mountains and untilled farmland) and its panoply of Central Asian faces (beautifully captured via crisp and penetrating close-ups for which the oft-abused term "humanism" was almost certainly invented).
Inert for the most part, the film finally explodes in a sweet flurry of emotions when the characters leave the bar and embrace the tangle of the trees outside.

 Ishtar (1987): Reviews
Ishtar is a good movie, but you can't help but wonder if, lurking somewhere in those cans of outtakes, there isn't a great movie, too.
Ishtar is an unabashed vamp for a pair of household names, and as such it works, often hilariously.
Ishtar isn't funny, it isn't clever, and it isn't entertaining, the complete opposite of Young Frankenstein, a true comedy classic.

The Fireworks of Elaine May - New York Times
Her first film, it is the funniest and perhaps the most distinctively hers because she wrote, directed and stars in it.
The film that followed, "The Heartbreak Kid" (1972), turned out to be her most famous and commercial movie, but Neil Simon's script hasn't aged well.
And then she got to "Ishtar." Unexpectedly, the first 20 minutes is hilarious, with Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman as Rogers and Clarke, a team of starry-eyed songwriters totally deluded about their lack of talent.

The whole film, in fact, is peppered with cultural flare-ups, though it's not really about the stupidity, barbarity or silliness of the Arab world.
True it is that Elaine May never went on to direct another film after Ishtar, though whether that was her punishment or simply her choice is beyond me. What I do know is that May is a talented writer, who never got credit for her work on Warren Beatty's Reds or Dustin Hoffman's Tootsie.
After weighing down the film's beginning with a kind of featurette about these characters and their odd obsession with bad music, both Hoffman and Beatty relax a little and let the story take them on a cruise down the lazy river.

Ishtar is not the "truly dreadful film, a lifeless, massive, lumbering exercise in failed comedy" that Roger Ebert gleefully eviscerated back in 1987.
Of course, comedy is a very subjective thing, but even someone hell-bent on proving that the film deserves its reputation would have a tough time keeping a straight face while Rogers and Clarke run through their repertoire.
As it is, the film's 22:17 opening serves as a sort of life support for the dire second act -- which flatlines the second Chuck and Lyle step off the plane.

The Art and Technique of Postproduction sound
The process certainly does not describe how the average film is made abroad; few other cultures have such a fetish for perfect lip-synching as ours--so even dialog is recorded after the shoot in many countries.
In some cases, however, sound designers are thought of as artists who are brought on staff during the planning stages of a film, along with the set and costume designers, and who do their own mixing.
For the sake of clarity, a film composer must orchestrate with instruments that do not overlap much with the frequency of the human voice or any dominant sound effects to be heard at the same time.

the flickering image in early films gave rise to the generic term flicks when referring to the movies; often used in a condescending way, such as stating that a film is a 'horror flick' or 'chick-flick'

And while most of the film is played in a genial, straightforward manner, the sequences involving a pampered rich girl (Andie MacDowell) and her macho father (Charlton Heston) are as bizarre as anything you'll find in David Lynch's Eraserhead.
As a diehard film noir aficionado who fondly recalls the brilliant plotting of classic crime flicks, I tend to be strict when it comes to gaping plotholes, so those folks who don't mind that one plus one equals three may want to raise my rating for Along Came a Spider a notch or so.
But that's where the film works its mojo: Memento is as crafty as any other well-constructed murder-mystery, because every time we think we know the score, the movie pulls in a new component from the past that forces us to reflect (and re-reflect, and re-re-reflect) on what we thought we already knew.
