isiNdebele (Ndebele) is one of the official languages of South Africa.
isiNdebele is also a major language in Zimbabwe (with an estimated 1,500,000 speakers), and there is also a small population of speakers in Botswana.
isiNdebele is a member of the "Nguni" language group, and is most closely related to isiZulu, isiXhosa and SiSwati.

IsiNdebele is one of the eleven official languages in the Republic of South Africa.
Today the Ndebele speakers, mostly those who are educated still prefer to use isiNdebele as home language for their children and will use isiNdebele as a language to communicate with other isiNdebele speakers or use it where and when it suits their position and situation.
It must be born in mind that amaNdebele of Zimbabwe met amaNdebele of South Africa during Mzilikazi's path to the north of the southern subcontinent between 1828 and 1840.

 Lexicography in a Multilingual South Africa
It is the aim and the objective of the Dictionary Unit for isiNdebele to produce a comprehensive monolingual dictionary that will benefit the mother-tongue speakers of isiNdebele and also all other South Africans who are interested in studying the language within a short period.
That is the reason why the Dictionary Unit for isiNdebele went through a number of important stages in the past two years in order to qualify for recognition and official funding.
The main aim of this conference was to ascertain whether there is any support from grass roots level for the establishment of the dictionary unit for isiNdebele and to assure that the unit functions in close co-operation with all the stakeholders involved in the development of isiNdebele.

A Consultative Conference on the dictionary needs of isiNdebele was organized and held on 14 March 1997 in Kwandebele where the largest concentration of the Ndebele people live.
The roleplayers elected Mr P.B. Skhosana to be the leader of the new Dictionary Project for IsiNdebele and mandated Professor Prinsloo to draw up a formal Business Plan for the establishment of such a unit in terms of the requirements of the South African Government.
IsiNdebele can now, as a direct result from this sponsorship, take its rightful place among well established dictionary units such as those for Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa, and Sepedi.

And now, minority languages are fast vanishing throughout the world as their last speakers die, or as dominant languages like English, Shona and Ndebele in the case of Zimbabwe push them out of common usage.
In Zimbabwe, linguists say there are up to 16 African languages or dialects spoken in the country of which ChiShona and IsiNdebele are the dominant ones.
There are up to 14 minority dialects in the country, which include Kalanga spoken in Bulilimamangwe district in Matabeleland South, Hwesa in the Nyanga district, Sotho in Gwanda South, Shangani in Chiredzi, Chitoko-Tonga (Mudzi Tonga) in Mudzi district, Venda in Beitbridge and Tonga in the Binga, Omay and Nyaminyami districts.

The Tshwane based IsiNdebele station Ikwekwezi FM has lost one of it's shining stars on the airwaves Klaas Skhosana affectionately known as Rhee or the Milleneum DJ to the millions of the station's listeners.
The internationally acclaimed painter says she relaxes by listening to IsiNdebele music while she likes boxing as it reminds her of traditional way of fighting amongst amaNdebele boys.
IsiNdebele language would have not reached the level of being recognised as one of the official languages in South Africa had it not been the marvellous work of dedicated individuals within the community of Amandebele.

TCS has been working with local linguists and NGOs for a few months now and assisting them in mapping the sounds and developing a script for one South African language namely 'Northern Sotho', spoken by one of the Zulu Tribes.
South Africa has 11 official languages including Afrikaans English, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Sepedi, Sosotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga, besides several dialects.
Many of these dialect do not have their own script and use the Roman script.
