Iskandariya (إسكندرية, also given as Iskandariyah, Iskanderiyah, Iskanderiya, Iskanderiyeh or Sikandariyeh) is an ancient town in central Iraq, one of a number of towns in the Near East named after Alexander the Great (Iskander in Arabic).
During the late 1980s, Iskandariya was the site of a major element of President Saddam Hussein's programme to acquire nuclear weapons.
Iskandariya is one of the last big towns before Baghdad and possesses a major military air base, and as such was a major target for United States forces during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Iskandariya came one day after announcements that the U.S. forces would be redeploying outside the Iraqi capital leaving the job to the Iraqi police.

The blast came as a team of U.N. experts was visiting Iraq to study the feasibility of direct elections in the spring, and one day after the U.S. military confirmed the interception of a letter it says was written by a terrorist operative seeking al-Qaida's assistance in inciting further violence in Iraq.
Many of the victims of the Iskandariya blast were young men lined up to apply for jobs as police officers.

Two Marines were killed by a roadside bomb near Iskandariya two nights ago and comrades involved in the raids said they were keen for revenge but frustrated by the difficulties of tracking down the culprits.
