Iskander Bey (aka George Kastriotes), the son of an Albanian chief, had been reared as a hostage in the Ottoman court in Adrianople (Edirne).
When the Ottomans were forcefully ejected from all of Europe (except for eastern Thrace) as a result of the Balkan Wars (1912-13), Albanians were left to deal with the advancing armies of Serbia and Montenegro without assistance from the armies of the Khilafa.

The eagle dates back to George Castriota, an Albanian Christian who became a Turkish general in the 15th century under the name of Iskander Bey, or Skanderberg.
Castriota used the double-headed eagle on his seals and this has led it to being on the modern flag.

The eagle goes back to George Kastriotialso known as Iskander Bey, or Skanderbeg (see below), who led the fight of the Albanians against the Turks in the 1440's.
He used the Byzantine two-headed eagle on his seals, hence the modern flag.
