Islam was introduced into the region in about 630 when Prophet Muhammad was still alive.
Virtually all citizens in Yemen today are Muslims, either of the Zaydi order of Shi'a Islam or the Shafi'i order of Sunni Islam, representing approximately 35 percent and 65 percent of the total population, respectively.
Under Islam as applied in the country, the conversion of a Muslim to another religion is considered apostasy, a crime punishable by death.

The Republic of Yemen is a country in the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia, and is a part of the Middle East, bordering the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Red Sea, between Oman and Saudi Arabia.
