Topic: Islamey

  Balakirev, Islamey: An Oriental Fantasy
Islamey: an Oriental Fantasy is a fantasy for piano by Russian composer Mily Balakirev, written in September 1869.
For a time, Islamey was touted widely as the most technically difficult work in the literature, and the extent of this was shown in Maurice Ravel's desire to make his suite of pieces, Gaspard de la Nuit, "more difficult than Balakirev's Islamey".
Islamey was premiered by the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, and championed by pianists such as the great Franz Liszt.

Mily Balakirev - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He is better known today for bringing together the composers known as The Five than for his own music, with the possible exception of his Islamey: an Oriental Fantasy, which is still popular among pianists.
His orchestral works are generally pieces of programme music in a style developed by Balakirev's disciples, such as Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov.
Islamey is particularly favored among pianists, due to its difficult nature.

Islamey received its Carnegie Hall premiere on April 17, 1891, in Recital Hall (now Zankel Hall) with Arthur Friedheim.
Few of Balakirev’s own compositions enjoyed the same celebrity as those of his students, with the exception of Islamey, his great “Oriental Fantasy” (as it is subtitled).

Alas, he was rather insistent on using his approach to composition, and eventually the others migrated away into other areas of expression, notably opera.
Balakirev's piano music is wonderful stuff, though generally pretty challenging, and perhaps his most durable legacy is his Islamey, regarded by quite a few knowledgable people as the most difficult playable piano solo in existence...
There are many repeated notes (it's a characteristic of the islamey, the dance for which the piece is named).

Sadly, for all his pioneering work, his disagreeable personality has left his works largely neglected, perhaps with the exception of Islamey, hardly his most representative work but largely valued for its opportunity of showmanship.
Alexander Paley was born in Moldova and graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, emigrating to the States in 1988.
Given that Ravel wrote Gaspard de la Nuit partly to rival the extreme difficulty of the other piece, it then follows that Islamey was the original Mount Everest for pianists.

Is Mily Balakirev’s “Islamey” (or Oriental Fantasy) really the most difficult piano work around, technically speaking?

Despite competition from Argerich, Ashkenazy, Grafman, Kissin and others, this is still pretty much the most dazzling performance of the Prokofiev 1st Piano Concerto ever recorded.
Originally coupled with an equally brilliant performance of the Ravel Left Hand Piano Concerto (not now available except 2nd hand) it is also notable for its exceptionally full and brilliant recording.
The Tchaikovsky concerto is also very fine, though here the competition is pretty fierce - while Balakirev's Islamey is pretty stunning also.

This unique piece has all the signature qualities we associate with Tchaikovsky: lush Romantic textures, tuneful melodies and high Russian drama.
Balakirev's Islamey is a piece which was frequently performed by the great keyboard virtuosi of the early 20th century but was rarely heard in subsequent years, possibly because it is notorious among performers as being one of the most technically difficult pieces ever written for the piano.
It is perfect for Yefim Bronfman, who combines a dazzling technical gift with deep interpretive insight and a predisposition to Russian repertoire.
