The Islamic Republic of Mauritania, or Mauritania, is a country in northwest Africa.
Its coast faces the Atlantic Ocean on the west, with Senegal on the south-west, Mali on the east and south-east, Algeria on the north-east, with the Moroccan-annexed territory of Western Sahara on the north-west.
From the 3rd to 7th centuries, the migration of Berber tribes from North Africa displaced the Bafours, the original inhabitants of present-day Mauritania and the ancestors of the Soninke.

The Poverty Reduction Project in Aftout South and Karakoro is IFAD’s ninth operation in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, with a total investment of about USD 64 million, in loans - all extended on highly concessional terms - and grants.
Mauritania became eligible for debt relief, and IFAD has decided in September 2000 to participate in the debt relief for this country under the Enhanced Debt Initiative for Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPCs).
