History of art - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The field of "art history" was developed in the West, and originally dealt exclusively with Western art history, with the High Renaissance (and its Greek precedent) as the defining standard.
Study of the history of art is a relatively recent phenomenon; prior to the Renaissance, the modern concept of "art" did not exist, and art was used to refer to workmanship by generally anonymous tradespeople.
In Byzantine and Gothic art of the Middle Ages, the dominance of the church insisted on the expression of biblical and not material truths.

Islamic art is a broad term used for works of art, often created by Muslims, influenced by the Islamic cultures of the various Muslim countries.
Islamic art, a part of the Islamic studies, has throughout history been mainly abstract and decorative, portraying geometric, floral, Arabesque, and calligraphic designs.
Islamic art is usually centered around Allah, and since Allah cannot be represented by imagery ["All you believe him to be, he is not"], geometric patterns are used.

Islamic art is perhaps the most accessible manifestation of a complex civilization that often seems enigmatic to outsiders.
Royal patronage of secular art was also a standard feature of Islamic sovereignty, one that enabled the ruler to demonstrate the splendor of his court and, by extension, the superiority of his state.
Of course, not all works of Islamic art were sponsored by the court; in fact, the majority of objects and manuscripts in museum collections originated elsewhere.

Islamic Art   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The origin of Islamic art has often tried to be explained through tracing it back to some precedent in Byzantine, Sassanid, Coptic or other art, yet what is lost sight of, is the intrinsic and original unity of Islamic art and thus the 'seal' that Islam conferred on all borrowed elements.
The art of Islam receives its beauty not from any ethnic genius but from Islam itself and just as Islamic science has its roots in the Qur'an and hadith, so the typical forms of Islamic art are rooted in the spirit of Islam.
An important lesson that Islamic art provides is in challenging the notion that works of art from earlier centuries need to be studied as historical 'phenomena', which belong to the past and have very little to do with the future.
