Shaped by storm and tides, Island Beach State Park is a narrow barrier island stretching for 10 miles between the restless Atlantic Ocean and the historic Barnegat Bay.
Island Beach is one of New Jersey's last significant remnants of a barrier island ecosystem that once existed along much of the coast and is also one of the few remaining undeveloped barrier beaches on the north Atlantic coast.
Island Beach is nationally known as a unique resource with over 400 plants identified, including the largest expanses of beach heather in New Jersey.

Island Beach, formerly know as Lord Stirling’s Beach, is a nine mile stretch of island covering over two thousand acres.
The island is alive with holly trees, red cedars, beach plum trees and sea grasses that cover most of the sand dunes and coastal forest areas.
In 1953, the State of New Jersey purchased the land from Phipp's heirs and officially opened it to the public as a State Park in 1959.

Those wishing to visit the park for the day must either bike or hike through the refuge (via beach or interior trails, and the interior trail is closed from November 1 through March 31), or boat or canoe in down Back Bay.
Park access is restricted, and the primitive conditions at the Park make it difficult for all but the seasoned back country camper.
The park’s location on a barrier spit allows visitors to observe beaches, dunes, maritime forests of oak and pine, wooded swamps, marshes and the bay all in one visit.

With the successful development of a state park program, the development of such a park at the seashore was an obvious suggestion.
Among the recommendations to the Governor was that of acquiring Island Beach for development as a state park and public playground.
In view of the turbulent history of Island Beach, its present unified ownership, and the relatively moderate disturbance that has thus far occurred, it seems unlikely that there will be a more opportune and desirable time of transferring it to the status of a natural history preserve, if it is deemed worthy of the preservation.

History: Matagorda Island State Park and Wildlife Management Area, in Calhoun County, is separated from the mainland by San Antonio and Espiritu Santo bays and is one of the barrier islands that borders the Gulf to protect the mainland from the great tides and strong wave action of the open ocean.
Under a cooperative agreement between the US Department of the Interior and the State of Texas approved in 1983, the entire area of public lands is managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
The island marshes are important nursery areas for shrimp, oyster, blue crab, and many species of sportfish, such as red drum, spotted sea trout, tarpon, shark, mackerel, and southern flounder.

Island Beach State Park is a refreshing change from the over-crowded, over-developed beaches that you find all over the east coast.
Island Beach State Park is located at the the very end of Route 35 South, about 4-5 miles south of Seaside Heights, in Ocean County.
If you plan on meeting friends or family at the park, there is parking right before the entrance to the park that is free (a rarity along the shore!), so it might be worth it to meet there and then pack into one vehicle.

This picture was taken near the southern-most point of the beautiful Island Beach State Park located in south-central New Jersey (exit 82 on the GSP).
The most glaring observation about this stretch of beach was the lack of man-made structures such as groins to control beach erosion.
There was the presence of dune grass along the upper portion of the beach, which catches suspended sand particles being transported by wind.

The beach is fairly nice, and the part of it that lies near the visitor center seems fairly clean and trash-free.
The most popular south Texas beaches are probably Galveston in the north, South Padre Island (Port Isabel) to the south, and Padre Island, Mustang Island, and the Port Aransas beaches (Corpus Christi area) smack in the middle.
Mustang Island is smaller, a little more crowded, but a little easier to get to and a little cheaper (unless you have a large group, in which case Padre is cheaper because you pay by the car).
