Island Line operate a single railway line on the Isle of Wight, running some 8½ miles from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin down the eastern side of the island.
The line also connects to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, a steam operated heritage railway at Smallbrook Junction.
In the mid-1990s it was planned to extend the line south to Ventnor.

Apart from visiting the island when my children were small and taking open top buses to the usual tourist haunts, I had never paddled there until summer 2004.
It is believed that the island was formed as recently as 7,000 years ago when the sea levels began to rise, as the ice caps retreated.
It is one of the few ‘unspoilt’ estuaries on the island and large numbers of seabirds nest and feed on the marshland.

 Crouch Valley Line History
The line took about two years to build with materials shipped in to a quay at Stokes Hall, Althorne by Thames barge, and was opened along it entire length to goods traffic on the 1st June 1889 with passenger services starting one month latter.
In March 1890 a curve linking the Wickford/Southminster line to the Wickford/Southend on Sea line was opened, the exact route of this curve is not know and was only in use for 5 years before the curve was closed on the 1st March 1895.
A brick and tile works were sited on the island that used a tramway to convey the material to and from a quay on the river where barges provided waterborne transport.

The Island Line consists of one eight-mile route near the east coast of the Isle of Wight; it is almost the sole survivor amongst the Island's former 55.5 route-mile railway network.
The line used to continue a further four miles through difficult terrain to Wroxall and the terminus at Ventnor, but this was closed in April 1966.
The Southern decided in light of this that the line should be electrified and the tube stock operated accordingly, thus allowing further `imports' of tube stock to occur as required.

The lifeboat took the speedboat to the pontoon at Hayling Island Sailing Club to meet the lifeboat shore crew, the Hayling Island First Responders and an ambulance where the lifeboat crew had to use a special stretcher to carefully move the casualty from the speedboat.
The 3 adults on the yacht, in danger of being washed overboard refused to leave their vessel and be transferred to the D Class lifeboat.
A tow line was successfully attached to the yacht and the anchor line was cut.

In the privatisation of the UK rail network, the system is unique in being the only vertically integrated franchise, in that it includes both the operation of the trains and the maintenance of the infrastructure in one franchise which is held by Stagecoach.
A service of nostalgic steam trains recreating the Island railways prior to their closure in 1966 operates over a five mile section between the junction with the Island line at Smallbrook and the small village of Wootton on the former Ryde to Cowes line.
The line does not perform a great public transport role, but is a tourist destination which is easily accessible by public transport, and which is promoted by all of the other operators with combined ticketing.

WHD is the mostly westerly point on the Island where the chalk downland ridge running through the spine of the island meets the sea.
The area known locally as 'Atherfield' is a flat expanse of arable farmland along the southwest coast of the Island between the Ventnor Downs massif and the chalk ridge running through the middle of the Island.
Ravens and Peregrines are regular, whilst during the autumn/winter Merlins are attracted to the flocks of small birds in the stubble/set aside, and grey geese, owls and harriers are occasional on the arable land or in the rough ground around Atherfield Farm.

The Rock Island concert on the Isle of Wight was the big curtain raising event of the 2002 return of the Isle of Wight Festival, last held on the island in 1970 when Jimi Hendrix headlined along with The Doors, The Who, Moody Blues and Joan Baez.
The 2002 Rock Island concert was held on the Queen's Golden Jubilee Bank Holiday of Monday 3rd June and this is very much my personal story.
We had the opportunity for a few brief words with James again after the set and we told him how much we'd enjoyed it and apologised for the stupidity of a few idiots in the crowd, but James claimed not to have noticed and was more generous about it than he needed to be.

There are plenty of good guidebooks to the Island, and the free ones on the ferries are among the best, so I shant go into too much detail.
The farm is reasonably central for any part of the island, there is a footpath into Arreton, where there is a pub, and a post office/convenience store.

Located on Culver Parade and designed in the shape of a giant pterodactyl, the new museum displays over 1000 of the best fossils from the Islands collections.
An introductory exhibition gallery covers the geology and fossils of the Island in a walk back through time, taking the visitor from the Ice Age of the recent past, back to the Cretaceous period when dinosaurs lived.
There is also the Stagecoach Island Line Train service from Ryde Pierhead to Sandown, which runs every half an hour (connecting with the Fastcat from Portsmouth) taking approximately 45 minutes.

By Thursday I have realised that the west end of the island is more chalky, better draining and less muddy so I set out for a longer ride to the Needles.
Cattle have reduced it to a quagmire and the wheels sink up to the hubs in places, my feet are dragging in the mud and the water running into the tyre ruts rapidly overtakes me and hides the driest line.
In a way it's a pity that we visited in the wettest spring for years but I certainly had a few memorable rides while on the island though not all entirely enjoyable.

The novel itself is focused on the redemption of the main character, Will Farnaby, and the eventual destruction of the secondary character, the island of Pala.
Through out the story, Huxley has the ever present threat of the Rendeng government’s inevitable invasion, looming in the background…the invasion that Farnaby is supposed to help with.
Out of 5 stars (5 being best), I will give this book 2, because it is akin to reading Bertrand Russell (IOW five pages has me spacing out and subsequently rereading the same five pages half an hour later) and it is heavy on philosophy but light on plot/story line.
