  Baltimore Projects - Smith Island Environmental Restoration and Protection       Project
The restoration efforts are focused on the northern half of the island that comprises the Martin National Wildlife Refuge.
The island is populated by a unique culture of watermen descended from the original settlers of 350 years ago.
Smith Island is part of a chain of islands that form the border between Chesapeake Bay and Tangier Sound, and is comprised of 97-percent emergent wetlands.

 Peanut Island Restoration
The island was originally a shallow-water habitat, but numerous placement of dredged material has changed it into an impacted upland dominated by the exotic species known as Australian pine.
Also on the island is the historic Coast Guard station and boathouse, built in 1936, which is expected to be incorporated into the Palm Beach Maritime Museum.
This program is used to protect, conserve and restore coastal living resources through implementation of "on the ground" restoration projects as well as to perform research, monitoring and public outreach activities.

 (TE-20) Isles Dernieres Restoration East Island - General Factsheet
East Island, which is one of five islands that comprise the Isles Dernieres barrier island chain, is located approximately 13 miles south of Cocodrie, Louisiana, in Terrebonne Parish.
It is bordered to the north by Lake Pelto and Terrebonne Bay, to the west by New Cut and Trinity Island, and to the south by the Gulf of Mexico.
Restoration of barrier islands also provides benefits to the inland marsh due to wave energy reduction, which is not included in the benefited acreage figure.

 Rhode Island Lighthouses
Restoration work by the Abcore Restoration Company was nearly complete by the end of 2005, and ceremonies relighting the lighthouse were held July 30, 2006.
In the spring of 2006 the Fresnel lens was restored for later reinstallation in the tower.
The restoration began in August 2003 and was to be completed in the summer of 2005.

Feral cats were introduced to the island to control rats in the 19th century.
The RSPB and Ascension Island Government, with funding from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, are now trying to address this issue and restore the seabird populations of Ascension Island.
RSPB is obviously concerned that in undertaking this restoration project we use the most humane means practically possible and to this end we have sought advice from the RSPCA and are working closely with the AISPCA.

Tree islands are important centers of biodiversity in the Everglades, with two to three times the plant and animal diversity of the surrounding wetlands.
Restoration of these islands is an important component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), which requires solid scientific evidence on requirements for tree-island formation and development to maximize chances for successful tree-island restoration.
Fixed tree islands are prominent features of the central and southern Everglades and contrast with Loxahatchee strand islands in their teardrop shape, concentration of trees and shrubs at the north end of the island, and development of a dense, shrubby tail south of the head.

Poplar Island, recently on the verge of disappearing, is today a national model for habitat restoration and the beneficial use of dredged material.
Development on the island had evolved to include numerous farms, a post office, school, and sawmill, but the residents were becoming increasingly concerned about their shrinking real estate.
Following the necessary environmental studies, it was determined that rebuilding Poplar Island and restoring over 1,000 acres of diverse habitat was a viable beneficial use of dredged material.

 Montauk Lighthouse Tower Restoration Project
During the first phase of the restoration, all of the metal decking was repaired and restored.
Phase two of the restoration project focused on the exterior of the lighthouse tower, particularly on the bulges and the major cracks.
The interior work included repair and restoration of the portholes, restoration of the brass windows, repairing and repointing the cracks that were visible throughout the tower, in addition all the parget above all the windows was restored.

Whiskey Island, which is one of five islands that comprise the Isles Dernieres barrier island chain, is located 18 miles southwest of Cocodrie in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana.
It is bounded by Coupe Colin to the west, Whiskey Pass to the east, Lake Pelto, Caillou Boca, and Caillou Bay to the north, and the Gulf of Mexico to the south.
Barrier island vegetation, including smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora), marshhay cordgrass (Spartina patens), bitter panicum (Panicum amarum) and fl mangrove (Avicennia germinans) was planted in the Coupe Nouvelle marsh restoration area and in the restored back bay marsh areas.

The shallow lagoon and snorkeling area on the southeast side of the island are expected to be a big draw as visitors will be able to snorkel in a safe, boat-free area that receives clean, clear ocean water with every high tide.
Peanut Island was created in 1918 as a result of the placement of spoil material from numerous dredging projects, such as the construction and maintenance of the Lake Worth Inlet and the Port of Palm Beach turning basin.
The perimeter of the island also supports Palm Beach County's Peanut Island Park, which consists of campground facilities, pathways, picnic pavilions, a fishing pier, boat docks and restrooms.

The state Department of Fish and Game is studying a $22 million plan to restore the ponds to a tidal salt marsh, which would flood the mud flats and standing pools of rain water the mosquitoes lay their eggs in.
Later the island was bought by the Leslie Salt Company, which used it to evaporate salt until the 1960s.
The Bair Island restoration could be the last great battle in a long war between the County and mosquitoes -- a war which often went the mosquitoes' way.

The restoration of the Plum Beach Lighthouse after 60 years of neglect is of particular significance because it won the prestigious Preservation Award from the Rhode Island Historic Preservation and Heritage Commission in 2004.
The restoration of the Dutch Island Lighthouse is being partially funded by an Intermodal Surface Transportation, or ISTEA, grant for $120,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation administered through the state DOT.
