Islands' debut album is just the latest in a long line of wonderful records released by artists from that city over the last few years.
At the heart of Islands is 2/3's of the Unicorns, singer and guitarist Nick Diamonds and drummer J'aime Tambeur, but for this album the pair assembled a bunch of friends to fill in any gaps in their otherwise White Stripes resembling lineup.
Islands have managed to accomplish this and in so doing have produced the album of the year thus far.

In contrast, Islands is largely quiet and brooding, with dark, low tones played on reed, brass, and string instruments, woodwinds, along with moody mellotron pads here and there.
Although this album may not be a fan favorite and the lineup was pretty awful live (listen to Earthbound for proof), I find great pleasure in the overall darkness and gloom of the recording.
While "Islands" is the only studio album to feature the Fripp/Burrell/Collins/Wallace/Sinfield line-up, this band would continue on for nearly another year (minus Sinfield) with some relentless touring and a live album "Earthbound".

KING CRIMSON Islands reviews and MP3
Islands has a jazz flavour running through the haphazard selection of cuts but there is very little focus involved in organising the structures into cohesive pieces that might have made this a more worthwhile album.
The monstrous cello which barges the album in on the opener "Formentera Lady" is a false dawn and not a weight with to measure the power, or lack of, on the album.
Islands is a frustrating and very loose concept but Fripp would trim the band down and move toward new territory while trashing away the frustrations of this period of King Crimson which in my mind is stillborn.

Song Islands gathers most of their singles and EPs, including hard-to-find releases on tiny labels like Coming in Second and Instatone Brand, and proves that even at the beginning, the group's approach was firmly in place.
Still, even though they're not presented in strictly chronological order, the tracks on Song Islands do trace the band's evolution: songs like "Feedback (Life, Love, Loop)," "Weird Storm," and "Deeply Buried" are wrapped in more noisy preambles and tangents than some of the group's more recent material.
The album is also fairly egalitarian when it comes to representing all of the band's different sounds, providing just as many sonic freakouts as gentle ballads.

Album review: Islands - homsar_rb's Journal - Last.fm   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Islands are a Canadian (where else?) group formed from the ashes of tragically short-lived indie-pop weirdos The Unicorns, whose 2004 album The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?
It’s an incredibly varied album, veering from a traditional twee-pop guitar arrangement (the short, sweet ‘Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby’) to steel-drum-assisted calypso (‘Jogging Gorgeous Summer’) via a continuation of the rapping that The Unicorns hinted at on sinister highlight ‘Where There’s A Will There’s A Whalebone’.
Even as the album moves into its second half, which isn’t quite as immediately awesome as the first, there’s still a fair supply amount of niceties and curios.

Liner Notes for Cyrus Faryar's "Islands"
A gentle but idiosyncratic singer-songwriter album, it didn't sell well, perhaps in part because of a lavish release party (at Faryar's house, where the album was recorded) that might have eaten up a lot of the promotional budget.
Whereas Faryar had produced Cyrus himself, however, Islands would be handled by John Simon, who'd recently worked on records by the Band, Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and Blood, Sweat and Tears.
