The department of Islas de la Bahía was officially incorporated into the nation on 14 March 1872.
Islas de la Bahía ("Bay Islands") is one of the 18 departments (departamentos) into which the Central American nation of Honduras is divided.
The department covers a total surface area of 261 km² and, in 1991, had an estimated population of 24,000.

The largest department by surface area is Olancho department and by population is Francisco Morazán department and the smallest by both surface area and population is the Islas de la Bahía department.
Honduran terrain consists mainly of mountains (~80%), but there are narrow plains along the coasts, a large undeveloped lowland jungle La Mosquitia region in the northeast and the heavily populated lowland San Pedro Sula valley in the northwest.
In La Mosquitia lies the UNESCO-protected Biosphere of Río Plátano, with the Río Negro dividing the country from Nicaragua.

1825 : The constitutional congress convened in that year orders that the state be divided into seven departments: Comayagua, Santa Bárbara, Tegucigalpa, Choluteca, Yoro, Olancho, and Gracias (later renamed Lempira).
1881 : Parts of Yoro and La Mosquitia are separated to form Colón department.
