The Isle of Axholme is an area located in (An agricultural county of eastern England on the North Sea) Lincolnshire, between the three towns of (additional info and facts about Doncaster) Doncaster, (additional info and facts about Scunthorpe) Scunthorpe and (English portrait and landscape painter (1727-1788)) Gainsborough.
The name Isle is given to the area since, prior to the area being drained by dutchman (additional info and facts about Cornelius Vermuyden) Cornelius Vermuyden, each town or village formerly lay on areas of dry, raised ground in the surrounding marshland.
Axholme is taken from two OE words: Hakr (from which comes the town of Haxey) and -holme (island).

Opened in 1901, the Isle of Axholme Light Railway was the direct result of the failure of three previous attempts to build a standard gauge line from Goole to Haxey.
One of the IOA's larger steam locos normally managed to haul these mammoth trains to Trent unaided, there to hand over to the LJA for double heading over the tremendous gradients of the Lincolnshire Wolds to the coast.
The worst damage was suffered during a bombing raid on Goole docks when a direct hit on the IOA works destroyed one of the large steam locos and badly damaged another.
