Grain staff are mostly out of the office this week, tending our all-important booth at Congress 2007on the University of Saskatchewan campus.
The announcement of the Short Grain winning entries is delayed because we have been unable, as of yet, to contact one of the winners.
Grain is so proud to congratulate Charlotte Gill, who has won the $10,000 Danuta Gleed Literary Award for her short story collection Ladykiller.

The Isle of Sheppey is a small (36 square miles, 94 km²) island off the northern coast of Kent in the Thames Estuary, some 25 miles (40km) to the east of central London.
In common with the Wantsum Channel separating the Isle of Thanet from the mainland to the east; and Yantlet Creek at the Isle of Grain these were used in ancient times to allow shipping to reach ports such as Chatham and London without encountering the bad weather from the North Sea.
Sheerness is a commercial port and main town of the Isle of Sheppey and owes much to its origins as a Royal Naval dockyard town.

BP and Sonatrach are to make full use of their Isle of Grain capacity this winter, with the partners this month pledging that they would use the full 3.3 million t/yr capacity at the UK LNG import terminal to help alleviate potential shortages and price hikes.
Sonatrach and BP each own half of the total capacity.The Isle of Grain was built to handle about one cargo a week of LNG, but has taken only four in five months (from July, when the terminal started accepting shipments, to the end of November).
Isle of Grain, located on the river Medway, 36km east of London, is also strategically close to a number of the UK's gas-fired power stations and supplies homes and industry in the gas-hungry south-east.

Via its subsidiary Grain LNG Limited, NGT is the owner and operator of the Isle of Grain LNG storage terminal, which was commissioned in 1982 by the former British Gas.
With 4 existing storage tanks, the Isle of Grain LNG terminal is being transformed to offer an LNG storage capacity of approximately 193,000m3 as well as a delivery capacity around 500 million standard cubic feet per day.

ISLE OF GRAIN, England: Tankers laden with liquefied natural gas (LNG) have started docking at a new terminal near London as Britain boosts its gas imports to make up for sliding output from maturing North Sea fields.
LNG coming into Grain is for energy major BP and Algerian state producer Sonatrach which own all the import capacity available under phase one of the terminal.
The Grain terminal is set up to receive one cargo a week but that volume has yet to be reached as suppliers have steered cargoes to more attractively priced markets like Spain and the US, according to industry sources.

A bespoke DTS system designed by Sensa has been installed at the terminal, providing 82 sensing elements that are attached to the top and bottom surfaces of the pipe.
The pipeline forms part of the first phase of the development of the LNG terminal at the Isle of Grain, which was opened earlier this year as part of National Grid’s development project and £130m of initial investment.
In addition to an ongoing temperature monitoring process, the system has already successfully monitored the preliminary process of cooling along the pipeline, which must be done prior to the first transportation of the LNG to reduce stress and damage on the pipes.

A man aged 32 is claiming to be the youngest person in the UK to contract a fatal cancer caused by asbestos from domestic exposure to the substance.
He is the youngest person known to the firm to have the disease allegedly as a result of domestic exposure.
But it said that it did have a number of asbestos-related claims from the 1970s arising from the Isle of Grain.

It currently has almost 10,000 megawatts of generation capacity in the UK and the new Isle of Grain plant will see this rise by a further 1,200 megawatts.

This is a generalisation of pages 329 to 345 of J.M. Bruces's British Aeroplanes 1914-1919 second Impression 1969 (I used to crib from the original edition in Manchester Central Library in 1957-58 instead of studying for my professional exams!).

The Isle of Grain terminal in the Thames estuary will shortly become operational with an annual capacity of 3.3 million tonnes of LNG.
This capacity will subsequently be increased to 9.8 million tonnes/year by the end of 2008, representing almost 12% of natural gas consumption in the United Kingdom.

On LNG imports meanwhile, Ofgem has welcomed news from National Grid, BP and Sonatrach about the use of the Isle of Grain LNG import facility this winter.
BP and Sonatrach have stated that the facility will be utilized fully over the next fortnight and that they expect to be using the full capacity of the facility until the end of the winter.
The three companies are also improving the arrangements for transparency and "use it or lose it" at the Isle of Grain facility.
