This piece is a representation of the famous “Round church” of Bowmore, Islay that was constructed in 1767 by Daniel Campbell of Islay.
The jug is inspired by two of Islays most famous historical symbols, the West Highland Galley and the Hebridean Knight.The galley, known as a birlinn (beer-linn), was famous as the warship of the Lords of the Isles (Clan Donald) and was utilised throughout the Irish sea from c.1000 AD until around 1600.
The galley known as a birlinn (beer-linn), was the legendary warship of the “Lords of the Isles” whom ruled from the Irish sea from the Isle of Man to the Isle of Lewis for nearly five centuries.

We visited Islay in September and particularly noticed the vividness of the autumn colours there, together with the relatively unspoilt coastline and abundant wildlife.

Just under a year ago, a public inquiry was held on Islay into the proposed siting of a five-turbine windfarm on a low hill overlooking Duich Moss, the largest roosting site for Greenland Whitefronts on the island, holding up to 1500 birds.
It is clear that whether or not these five wind turbines are placed beside Duich Moss or not is hardly in the national interest.
It would be really good if the developers would undertake a proper investigation of the potential for wind power on Islay instead of, as hitherto, just on one estate.
