The Isle of May is located in the north of the outer Firth of Forth, approximately 8 km (5 miles) off the coast of Scotland.
The visitor centre of the isle, the old Low Light lighthouse buildings, was founded as a bird observatory in 1934, the first such observatory in Scotland.
The island is closed to visitors from 1 October until 1 May to prevent disturbance to the large number of seal pups.

In really dense fog even the powerful light on the Isle of May could not be seen from the foot of the tower owing to the heavy cost of maintaining the generating plant and the greatly increased power of oil lights made possible by the incandescent mantle.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution rewarded the lightkeepers on the Isle of May for saving lives when the MATAGORDA was wrecked in 1872 and the German Government sent a binocular field glass each to Robert Grierson and Laurence Anderson who helped the crew of the PAUL lost on Inchkeith in 1888.
The Isle of May was demanned on the 31 March 1989.

THE MANILA City Council has formally laid claim to an isle, which is actually a sandbar, popularly known as Isla Laki or Aplaya, located at the mouth of the Pasig River.
The isle, located in the southern portion of the mouth of the Pasig River and west of South Harbor's seawall, was once part of the river's old delta.
Astals said the isle has a potential as a tourism spot, which would be the best way to preserve the ecology of the place, a popular feeding area for fish and birds in Manila Bay.

BY M.L. The temporary closing of the Belle Isle Zoo that Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick proposed as part of his budget plan may not be so temporary, city officials said this week.
Kagan said the city would establish a shuttle from the east and west sides to the main zoo, which already is visited by 200,000 schoolchildren a year.
Kilpatrick said in April that the Belle Isle animals would be sent to the main zoo and other accredited zoos.

These have included 100 Bluethroats on the 14th May 1985, and, in 1982 exceptional numbers of autumn migrants such as 15,000 Goldcrests on the 11th October, and 10,000 Redwing, 2,000 Song Thrush, 4,000 Fieldfare and 30 Ring Ouzel in single days between 13th and the 17th.
The season of 1997 held a number of surprises, with an especially good third week in May, when in one day, five Bluethroat were present on the island, while a total of 11 Red-backed Shrikes were present during the period.
