Isle of Wight Festival 1970 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The third Isle of Wight Festival was held on August 26 - 30, 1970.
The Isle of Wight was a favourite retirement destination of the British well-heeled, and a haven of the yachting set, and many of the traditional residents deplored the huge influx of 'hippies' and 'freaks'.
Activists, particularly from France, were incensed that the festival was not intended to be 'free' and felt that the double-walled arena was a clear example of an oppression of the masses that should be resisted and smashed, so that the musicians could play for their fans untainted by the demands of exploitative capitalists.

Isle of Wight Festival - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Isle of Wight Festival is a music festival which takes place on the Isle of Wight, an island off the south coast of England.
It was originally held from 1968 to 1970, the venues being Ford Farm (near Godshill), Wootton and Afton Down (near Freshwater) respectively.
The 1970 event was by far the largest and most famous of these early festivals, indeed it was said at the time to be one of the largest human gatherings in the world.

Rarebird's Spotlight Album Review #7: Message To Love - The Isle Of Wight Festival 1970 (1996)
The Isle of Wight festival, often referred to as the "British Woodstock", took place on that island off England's south coast in late August of 1970.
It was actually the third and final annual festival to be held on that island; the tradition was revived in 2002.
The 1970 festival became the subject of the documentary film Message To Love: The Isle Of Wight Festival; due to financing problems, the film was not completed and released until 1996.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Island revels in festival revival
When some 600,000 hippies travelled to the Isle of Wight festival in 1970, crowds tore down the fences in protest at the "capitalist pigs" who were charging £3 a ticket.
Almost 60,000 were at the festival's modern incarnation this weekend, with tickets costing £105 a pop, the fence intact and scarcely a hippy in sight.
Music festivals are now at the heart of mainstream culture and the variety of tribes at events like Isle of Wight has widened to cover most corners of society.

Jimi Hendrix played his last ever performance at 1970’s Isle Of Wight Festival, and, although the event has only been back on the map for three years, it has already re-established itself as a key date on Europe’s live music calendar.
As with most festivals, a great deal of energy is needed across a wide field, with a sudden regulatory “boundary” for SPL rising out of thin air at the perimeter fence.
At the Isle of Wight, Canegreen tackled this problem with a unique and pioneering technique implemented in consultation with Meyer Sound’s Mauricio Ramírez, who was on hand to give the engineers guidance and support.

Robert Christgau: Found Weekend: The Isle of Wight Festival 1970
Now as then, the film is a better advertisement for the fans than for the music that brought them together, most engaging when it focuses on its chosen cross-section of Woodstock Nation's 300,000 or 500,000 fools--sometimes wise or sainted, always self-righteous/self-deluded/self-whatever.
The film is fine fun the way Lerner constructed it, as a basically comic critique of the two historical forces that can be said to have battled over the aforementioned preconditions, the more material of which was just then disappearing from the face of the earth as our industrialized standard of living stopped rising.
Lerner, in fact, doesn't bother to provide their last names, which I obtained from Isle of Wight native Mike Plumbley, coauthor of the self-published Isle of Wight Rock: A Music Anthology (Isle of Wight Rock Archives, Palmer's Forge, Newport Road, Niton, Isle of Wight, U.K.).

On August 28, 1970, we thought we had found the answer to it all at East Afton, but we were young and innocent (still possible in those days) and walked straight into the trap.
The Festival video was a long time coming, and turned out to be the edited version of what happened, something quite different from what most people actually experienced, complete with commentary and opinion delivered by "characters" who were totally irrelevant at the time.
The video, probably unwittingly, does record what might in retrospect be seen as a turning point in the destiny of a generation that came close to breaking out of the cage that could still at that time have been pulled apart.

The Isle of Wight Festival of 1970 has enjoyed a bit of resurgence lately thanks to the video release of a movie of the festival, with a soundtrack, plus individual performance releases by the Who, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
The Message of Love was now the Message of ME -- flagrantly displayed in the Isle of Wight movie that seems to center on an unruly crowd of thousands who want to get into the show, but don't want to pay the admission, and the promoters dealing with it.
Whereas some of the acts who appeared at the Isle of Wight might sooner put it behind them or not even live to tell about it, ELP recalls the event as a monumemtal moment in the history of the band.

The festival included sets from The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Joni Mitchell, Free, Miles Davis, The Moody Blues, and many more--an eclectic lineup, to say the least.

Comment: I bought this DVD after attending the revived Isle of Wight Festivals (most recently 2005 headlined by REM), curious to know what made the 1970 festival so legendary, and the last of its kind (more than 30 years passed before the Isle of Wight dared stage another).
I would say that this festival was ultimately better than Woodstock with a stronger line up of artists.
However, it is the bands and artists that really make or break a festival, and it's difficult to imagine a stronger line up of bands at the peak of their game.

The 1970 Isle of Wight Festival was the last great gathering of the ‘60s generation.
There is a simply magnificent movie that was made of this festival, “Message to Love – The Isle of Wight Festival,” which features performances by The Moody Blues, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and The Who, to name a few.
On August 30, 1970, The Who took the stage at about 2:00 AM and with the help of a 125,000-watt PA and airport landing lights, they made it impossible to ignore them.

Over the past two years, The Who's entire catalog has been remastered and reissued, and each set has been graced with a slew of bonus tracks and alternate takes.
Live at Leeds -- the band's epic live album recorded on February 14, 1970 -- was expanded from its original six tunes to include fourteen selections, though the entire performance of Tommy was reduced to Amazing Journey/Sparks.
Much as its title suggests, Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 was recorded six months later at the UK's Isle of Wight Festival, and it corrects the only weak point on Live at Leeds.
