The primary purpose of the AONB designation is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the landscape, with two secondary aims: meeting the need for quiet enjoyment of the countryside and having regard for the interests of those who live and work there.
AONBs are created under the same legislation as the national parks, the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949.
The smallest AONB is the Isles of Scilly (1976), 16 km², and the largest AONB is the Cotswolds (1966), 2,038 km².

The JAC membership consists of representatives from the Countryside Agency, the Council of the Isles of Scilly, Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Duchy of Cornwall, English Nature, Isles of Scilly Tourism Association, Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, National Farmers Union and Tresco Estate.
In 2004, the AONB Unit published an AONB management plan on behalf of the Council of the Isles of Scilly.
As part of the AONB Unit's work to increase awareness and understanding of the AONB the following have been developed: a dedicated website containing a database of documents relating to the islands; a range of leaflets; a visitor information pack; a newsletter; a cross curricular education pack; interpretation panels and gateway signs.

 High Weald | Facts and figures
The first AONB to be designated was the Gower in 1956 and the most recent the Tamar Valley in 1995.
The total area of the High Weald AONB is 145,707 hectares (360,050 acres; 1,457 square kilometres; or 563 square miles).
This makes the AONB the largest in South East England and the fourth largest in England and Wales (The largest being the Cotswolds AONB at 2,038 square kilometres and the smallest being the Isles of Scilly AONB at 16 square kilometres).

Committed to the conservation of wildlife, the landscape, archaeological and historical remains of Scilly.
In July 1986, the Isles of Scilly Environmental Trust was formed as a registered charity.
The Trust is responsible for the management of all the land that is leased to it by the Duchy of Cornwall on the inhabited islands, in addition to all the uninhabited islands, islets and rocks.
