Topic: Islet Cell Carcinoma

  Islet cell carcinoma
The majority of islet cell cancers are nonfunctional and produce symptoms from tumor bulk or metastatic dissemination.
Because of the presence of several cell types in the pancreatic islet cells (alpha, beta, delta, A, B, C, D, E), the term islet cell carcinoma refers to at least five distinct cancers, which when functional, produce unique metabolic and clinical characteristics.
Patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 1, an autosomal dominant condition in which 85% have pancreatic islet cell tumors, 90% have hyperparathyroidism, and 65% have pituitary tumors, are less likely to be cured by pancreatic resection than are patients with sporadic islet cell tumors.

CANCER - Islet Cell Cancer (Endocrine Pancreas)
Islet cell cancer, a rare cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in certain tissues of the pancreas.
Once islet cell cancer is found, more tests will be done to find out if cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body.
Treatment of islet cell cancer depends on the type of tumour, the stage, and the patient’s overall health.

Learn About Basal Cell & Squamous Cell Carcinomas
(Carcinoma is cancer that begins in the cells that cover or line an organ.) Basal cell carcinoma accounts for more than 90 percent of all skin cancers in the United States.
Both basal and squamous cell cancers are found mainly on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun -- the head, face, neck, hands, and arms.
To check for cancer cells, the tissue is examined under a microscope by a pathologist or a dermatologist.

 M. D. Anderson Cancer Center - Liver Tumor Study Group: Neuroendocrine Tumors
Islet cell carcinoma and carcinoid tumors are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all malignant disorders in the United States.
Hepatic metastases from carcinoid tumor or islet cell carcinoma are frequently hypervascular because they derive their blood supply predominantly from the hepatic artery.
Patients with islet cell carcinoma are often treated with systemic chemotherapy before hepatic artery occlusion, and those with carcinoid tumors are often treated with somatostatin analogue.

Islet Cell Tumors of the Pancreas
Islet cell tumors arise from the islets of Langerhans, the endocrine-hormone producing portion of the pancreas.
The immunohistochemical expression of the inhibitors of cyclin-dependent kinases p21 and p27 was investigated in 109 endocrine tumors of the pancreas and gastrointestinal tract and compared with that of Ki67 and p53.
We report four cases of primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the pancreas (islet cell tumors) that were characterized by prominent "rhabdoid" features of the tumor cells.

Hormone therapy uses hormones to stop the cancer cells from growing or to relieve symptoms caused by the tumor.

Islet cells from the pancreases of 20 day old fetuses were isolated and incubated for 30 min with mM of streptozotocin.
Insulin release from the pretreated islet cells incubated with 16.5 mM glucose was not increased significantly, compared with a three fold-increase in control islets.
Furthermore, the proportion of 2 cell embryos collected from streptozotocin diabetic mice which developed to blastocysts in vitro was similar to that of 2 cell embryos from control mice.

 Sloan-Kettering - Islet Cell Tumors
Islet cell tumors arise in the Isle of Langerhans, a cluster of specialized cells in the part of the pancreas that produces hormones (the endocrine pancreas).
Only about 5 percent of pancreatic cancers arise from the islet cells; most pancreatic cancers develop in the part of the pancreas that secretes digestive juices (the exocrine pancreas).
Islet cell cancers are usually diagnosed using blood and urine tests (to check levels of hormones) and x-rays or other special imaging tests.

In this multicenter trial, we randomly assigned 105 patients with advanced islet-cell carcinoma to receive one of three treatment regimens: streptozocin plus fluorouracil, streptozocin plus doxorubicin, or chlorozotocin alone.
The 31 patients in whom the disease did not respond to treatment were crossed over to chlorozotocin alone or to one of the combination regimens.
