Islington is one of London's smallest boroughs, about six square miles (10 square kilometres).
From 1800 to 1900 Islington grew from a population of less than 10,000 to 330,000 and as a consequence brick terraces replaced farms and open fields and the area lost most of its rural setting.
It was once a great looking 19th century station building with a drive-in forecourt, but after it was bombed by the Nazis in 1944 it is now a really sorry-looking bungalow style building, which they are now thankfully talking about replacing.

 Canal Tunnels of London
All London's canal tunnels are on the Regent's Canal.
Islington Tunnel was opened in 1820 along with the completion of the canal, a procession of boats passing through with a band playing, to be met by a salute of cannon fire as they emerged at the eastern end.
