Chapter 5: The Railway Age, 1874-1920
Work on the Tasmanian Main Line, at it was known, began in 1873, and the railway was built to the 3ft6in gauge, as had just become fashionable.
Works included fifteen tunnels and the extraordinary steel bridge over the Barron Falls, where the trains pass through the waterfall in the wet season.
This railway, the first of the many uniform-gauge intercapital lines built with Commonwealth financial assistance after World War II, was also a significant engineering feat, climbing to the sub-tropical rainforest-covered range at the border on an alignment which included Australia's first spiral, where trackage redoubled on itself to gain altitude.

National Railway Museum - Port Adelaide
Ordered by the famous Isambard Kingdom Brunel, then Consulting Engineer for the railway, they were built to the 2-4-0T wheel arrangement and arrived at Port Adelaide in November 1855.
On 8th February an additional trial was run, this time to Adelaide, but the locomotive derailed twice at Morphett Street before successfully entering the station.
Plans were drawn up for an "Engine Carriage Bogie Truck", and the vehicle, which was given the number 1272, was outshopped by the Adelaide Locomotive Works in 1884.

Work is in progress on the conversion of the first B-class to an A-class by Clyde Engineering at Adelaide's Rosewater on an unrecorded date in the 1980s.
Islington is owned by ASR, who have been unable to make use of these more recent locomotives despite the unreliability of the motive power they inherited when they purchased what was left of AN.
Since the privatisation of Australian National Railways (ANR or AN) in November 1997, the new owners of the remains of the system (Australia Southern Railroad) have rationalised their motive power, and made available a number of earlier units for purchase by other private rail operators in Australia.

The present terminus of the authorised works is within about a hundred miles of the original northern boundary of the province, and their extension on the land-grant principle through the continent has been recommended by the Transcontinental Railway Commission.
The railway station at Kapunda is seven hundred and fifty-five feet above the sea level, and is at the lowest part of the town.
There is a down grade nearly all the way, and the Morgan station at the northwest bend of the Murray, which is one hundred and five miles from Adelaide is only forty-one feet above the sea-level.

 History2
Islington had built many early locomotives and other vehicles, all of the stainless steel clad carbon steel bodied joint-stock (owned jointly by the Victorian and South Australian governments) passenger cars for the "Overland" Adelaide-Melbourne service, and similar but only slightly different vehicles for SAR's exclusive use.
Technically they were similar to the CLs, but they had an identical flat front and rear, and a control station at both ends to allow single unit running without turning, though anecdotal evidence suggests they rarely ran singly (except light engine).
The entire Mile End freight yard and locomotive servicing complex also went to the new owners (ANR), who inherited what was possibly the largest single employer work-force in the state; small wonder then that the Premier required the headquarters to be in Adelaide under the terms of transfer.

Atlas of South Australia 1986 - Urban Planning
Since the demise of the concept of Monarto, urban planning activity in South Australia has been concentrated on smaller projects such as the new town of Leigh Creek South, the River Torrens Linear Park in Adelaide, and the project to redevelop the Adelaide railway station site.
Reade outlined 'preliminary tentative ideas' for Adelaide and the suburbs including an outer belt of parklands, a linear park along the River Torrens, a new factory area near Port Adelaide, a new satellite town at Henley Beach and provision for garden suburbs beyond the outer parklands.
At the local level, there has recently been very useful work in recording and preserving buildings of heritage value, promoting residential 'infill' on bypassed vacant sites, improving streetscapes with planting and paving, and encouraging the Greening of Adelaide project which will enhance the environmental quality of the less leafy suburbs.

 Mr Webb's Steel Carriages
Most people have heard of South Australian Railways Commissioner Webb who during the 1920's built the new Adelaide Railway Station (now the Casino), introduced the large 500 class mountain and 600 class pacific engines and almost sent the State of South Australian broke before his contract was not renewed.
The tender allowed the manufacturer to deliver the cars complete in every respect and ready for traffic, free on rails at the Railway Locomotive Works Islington or alternatively they could be completed in sections ready for re-erection at Islington by the Railways.
At this time the Commonwealth Railways had been trying to get all steel rollingstock for the Trans-Australian line since 1917 but meet with little success due to political reluctance to purchase overseas and local producers inability to manufacture anything at an acceptable price.

These yards were later moved when the land they occupied became too valuable to operate as just a timber yard, to be located as new yards on a three acre site nearer the Port Adelaide Railway Station.

Nearby, to the east of the Avenida de Madrid (R.2981), the site of the city’s former El Portillo station had mostly been cleared, though the location of the old platforms could still be discerned and the station building might still have been in use by staff.
In January 2002 building work formally began on a new main station closer to the centre, capable of handling an increase from 578,000 departing passengers to a million by 2010.
At Calatayud (km221) the new line passes through the old station, with the broad-gauge tracks serving the western platforms close to the station building and the standard-gauge the eastern platforms.
