The Town of Islip is located in southern Suffolk County, New York (USA) on the south shore of Long Island.
As of the 2000 census, the town population was 322,612.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.9% who were 65 years of age or older.

Islip is a census-designated place and hamlet located in the Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York.
About 2.6% of families and 4.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.6% of those under age 18 and 7.8% of those age 65 or over.
The district has a K-1 center for kindergarten and first grade, two elementary schools for grades 2-5, a middle school for grades 6-8, and a high school for grades 9-12.

Johnson came to New York City to pursue a career as a jazz singer (she imagines Congress as "another opening, another show"), but in the 1960s moved to Suffolk with her husband, a New York City police officer, to raise a family.
When she was sworn in as Islip town clerk in 1991, she said, "I'm hoping this will do for politics (on Long Island) what Jackie Robinson did for baseball." (Robinson himself was a Rockefeller Republican.) She said upfront and out loud that it was a steppingstone to higher office.

The 1990 population of census tract 1458.03 was estimated at 4431 of which 5.85 percent of the population is under 5 years of age, 24.51 percent is 5-19 years of age, 64.23 percent is 20-64 years of age and 5.42 percent is 65 years or older.

A principle hamlet of the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, West Islip is bordered on the north by Brentwood, on the east by Bay Shore, on the south by the Great South Bay, on the west by the Village of Babylon.
Twelve years after Islip Town founder William Nicoll received his first royal patents on the east side of town in 1683, most of the land that now makes up West Islip was granted to friends of his, brothers Thomas and Richard Willetts, confirming their purchase of it from the Indians.
Islip's First Church: Historians say it was the Presbyterian Church of Islip and Huntington South built about 1730 - 20 years after the town was established - on what is now Montauk Highway near Sequams Lane.

Engine 3-4-9 was called to provide assistance at a New York City Fire Department firehouse on Greenpoint Avenue in Queens while the Tactical Rescue unit 3-4-14 was called to provide assistance at Ground Zero.
It was with great relief that the Islip Fire Department was able to report the safe return of all of it's Brother Firemen as well as their families.

RIVERHEAD, N.Y., March 9 — Peter McGowan, the Islip town supervisor and once one of the most powerful Republicans on Long Island, pleaded guilty on Thursday to charges of accepting thousands of dollars of kickbacks and stealing from his campaign fund to pay for restaurant meals, vacations and visits to spas.
McGowan, who was in his 14th year as the supervisor of Islip and was the de facto leader of the local Republican organization, resigned his town post on Wednesday morning and then pleaded guilty under a deal he had reached with prosecutors in advance of an indictment.
McGowan's downfall was a significant setback for the Republican Party, which was already reeling from a series of major defeats in recent years that had left the Towns of Islip and Smithtown as the only substantial Republican strongholds in the county.
