Guardian | Lord Islwyn of Casnewydd
Even Islwyn's longstanding commitment to devolution was sometimes interpreted as part of a continuing feud with the respected Swansea MP Alan Williams, a critic of devolution.
Islwyn made up for his lack of official preferment by serving extensively on the Commons parliamentary friendship groups - such as the British-Bulgarian, British-Syrian and British-Malta - which gave him plenty of opportunities for free travel, including to the Shah of Iran, Yasser Arafat and Colonel Gadafy.
Islwyn recalled that, in the Commons, he had voted to keep the age at 21: "I believe that young boys at 16 are very vulnerable," he said.

THE MOST popular Welsh-language writer of the 20th century, Islwyn Ffowc Elis, at the age of 29 in 1953, published a novel which captured the imagination of his generation and breathed new life into the writing and reading of Welsh prose.
It was Cysgod y Cryman (translated as Shadow of the Sickle, 1998), the story of the Vaughans of Lleifior, a farm in upland Montgomeryshire, and the pressures brought upon Edward Vaughan, the father, by the changing social conditions of the post-war period.
Islwyn Ffowc Elis was born at his aunt's council house in Acton, near Wrexham in Denbighshire, in 1924, but brought up a farmer's son at Glynceiriog in the same county.

The formal Twinning link between Islwyn Borough Council and Pisek has seen considerable activity since its inception in 1994, leading to an early expression of interest by the Mayor of  Pisek for Islwyn to provide technical assistance in a number of areas.
Although Islwyn operate the sewerage systems in their area as agents for Welsh Water, they clearly did not have the specialist expertise to investigate all other aspects of the water infrastructure.
In July 1994, staff from both Islwyn and WWI visited Pisek to carry out the preliminary technical assessment that was necessary to support an application for Know-How funding.

If turnout falls too far among core voters, freak results are possible — a little real swing will go a long way, and even apparently "safe" seats might not be as safe as they look.
Yet it fell to Plaid Cymru on a 47% turnout in the 1999 Welsh Assembly election.
Not voters in South Wales, of course, but the millions across the country who voted for Neil Kinnock in 1992 and are now not sure whether or not to vote for Tony Blair in 2005.

This was largely due to Islwyn Ffowc Elis, whose Cysgod y Cryman (The Shadow of the Sickle) is considered a milestone in the development of the form in Welsh.
In this and in subsequent work, Islwyn Ffowc Elis succeeded in giving the Welsh novel contemporary relevance, thereby opening up a new range of themes and ideas for exploration by the rising generation of novelists.
In this first book-length study in English of Islwyn Ffowc Elis, T. Robin Chapman provides a comprehensive assessment of the work of an author regarded by many as the father of the modern Welsh novel.
