A native of Colon, Panama, Laguna turned professional in 1960 and by 1962 won the Panamanian featherweight title.
Then in 1967, Laguna met Ortiz in a rubber match and lost a 15-round decision.
Laguna was unsuccessful in a rematch with Buchanan and announced his retirement in 1972.

Buchanan lost a 15 round decision to Velazquez, but nevertheless, he continued his ascent towards the number one spot in the rankings by beating Tavarez in a rematch, Chris Fernandez and Brian Hudson, the latter of whom was beaten by a knockout in five in a defense of the British Lightweight title.
Buchanan retained the title with another decision over Laguna, and then he had a couple of non-title affairs, one in London and one in South Africa.
The South African fight against Andries Steyn in Johannesburg was a mismatch with his opponent's corner throwing in the towel in the third round.

Vying to become the third lightweight champion in Panama’s rich history behind Ismael Laguna and Roberto Duran, Colon-born Miguelito Callist will finally get his opportunity April 10 against Lakva Sim for the vacant WBA 135-pound belt.
Callist was supposed to face Leonard Dorin on two previous occasions for the title, but complications, an injury, and an unwillingness to compete (see Dorin) muddled the event.
Ironically, the fight will be exactly 39 years after “Tigre” Ismael Laguna fought in the most widely mentioned prize fight in Panama’s history.
