Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The Oak Ridge Isochronous Cyclotron (ORIC) is a variable energy, multiparticle accelerator which was completed in 1962.
The isochronous, or azimuthally varying field (AVF), cyclotron concept was first proposed in 1938 by L.H. Thomas.
Isochronism refers to the constant orbit frequency of circulating ions obtained by radially increasing the magnetic field to compensate for relativistic increases in ion mass.

Cyclotron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cyclotrons can also be configured to strip hydrogen atoms of their electrons, producing a stream of high-energy protons which can be used to bombard other atoms to produce short-lived positron-emitting isotopes suitable for PET imaging.
The cyclotron is an improvement of the linear accelerator.
As the beam speed increases, cyclotron radiation is emitted from the side of the beam, because the magnet is turning and slowing, ("braking") the beam.

Synchrocyclotron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A synchrocyclotron is a cyclotron in which the frequency of the driving RF electric field is varied to compensate for the mass gain of the accelerated particles as their velocity begins to approach the speed of light.
Isochronous cyclotrons maintain a constant RF driving frequency and compensate for the relativistic mass gain of the accelerated particles by increasing the magnetic field with radius.
Isochronous cyclotrons are capable of producing much greater beam current than synchrocyclotrons.

The compact isochronous cyclotron is considered as a source of 1.75 MeV protons for the detection of explosives using gamma-ray resonant absorption technique.
Given the marginal request for the beam intensity and quality H¯ ions were selected for acceleration in the cyclotron aiming at the high efficiency extraction either by stripping at the 1st stage or by Electrostatic Deflector (ESD) attempting to meet the output beam specifications.
Calculation of the 30 mA CW beam motion through the cyclotron gave axial losses ~66% of the total intensity, radial losses of ~14% and ~20% of particles are accepted in the acceleration regime, corresponding to ~6 mA.

Cyclotrons and Synchrotrons: principle of operation
A cyclotron is not useful for acceleration of electrons since their rotation frequency in a magnetic field slows down quite rapidly even for as low energies as a few MeV due to the small rest mass of an electron.
A variant of the cyclotron is the microtron in which electrons are accelerated at one gap at the periphery of the orbits.
The sector-focusing cyclotron is sometimes called continuous wave (CW) cyclotron or isochronous cyclotron, to differentiate it from the frequency modulated (FM) cyclotron or the synchrocyclotron.

An electron model of an axially-symmetric isochronous cyclotron was constructed and the beam properties were investigated for the purpose of studying, experimentally, an accelerator using electric and magnetic fields in combination as a guide field.
As a model cyclotron of those which accelerate proton beams up to ∼100 MeV, a maximum energy of electrons of 50 KeV (γ\cong1.1) was chosen.
The isochronous field of the cyclotron was composed of electric and magnetic fields -- the electric field having a radial component and the magnetic field having an axial component on the median plane.

Abstract: This paper describes a beam dynamics code `PICN' for simulation of high current proton beams in an isochronous azimuthally-varying-field cyclotron.
It is assumed that the median plane and vertical motions are decoupled, so that the internal space-charge forces can be calculated by a particle-in-cell method applied to the median plane charge distribution.

At the Karlsruhe Isochronous Cyclotron a beam of about 3 ?A of 40-MeV deuterons impinged on a saturation thick target of natural lithium.
Any deuteron beam energy lower than 52 MeV would have been available at this cyclotron only by positioning the target some way inside the cyclotron magnet gap, so that it cuts into the spiralling beam trajectory, which means that the beam will hit the target only near one of its edges.
With the full energy, however, the `lifted' beam could be used, i.e., the beam was deflected away from its preceding turn by several millimeters using an electrostatic septum, as if it were to be extracted to a beam line.
