Isolation (computer science) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In database systems, isolation is a property that the changes made by an operation are not visible to other simultaneous operations on the system until its completion.
This is because to maintain the highest level of isolation a DBMS must acquire locks on data, which may result in a loss of concurrency, or else implement multiversion concurrency control, which may require additional application logic to function correctly.
Conversely, at higher isolation levels the possibility of deadlock is increased, which also requires careful analysis and programming techniques to avoid.

Encyclopedia of Medicine: Isolation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Isolation refers to the precautions that are taken in the hospital to prevent the spread of an infectious agent from an infected or colonized patient to susceptible persons.
Isolation practices are designed to minimize the transmission of infection in the hospital, using current understanding of the way infections can transmit.
Isolation practices can include placement in a private room or with a select roommate, the use of protective barriers such as masks, gowns and gloves, a special emphasis on handwashing (which is always very important), and special handling of contaminated articles.

CDC | Fact Sheet - Isolation and Quarantine (SARS)
Isolation refers to the separation of persons who have a specific infectious illness from those who are healthy and the restriction of their movement to stop the spread of that illness.
Isolation allows for the focused delivery of specialized health care to people who are ill, and it protects healthy people from getting sick.
In most cases, isolation is voluntary; however, many levels of government (federal, state, and local) have basic authority to compel isolation of sick people to protect the public.

Isolation is necessary from two points of view, color and kernel quality (sugars and texture).
Isolation may be accomplished in three ways, by distance, time of pollination, and blocking.
Where isolation of fields is convenient, maximum isolation would not need to exceed 600 feet, which is a conservative assumption based on distances used for seed production, where isolation is even more important.

 Peakbagger.com Help and Glossary Page
Isolation for any given summit is defined as the distance from that summit to the nearest higher land.
However, the isolation values on this site are calculated to the nearest higher peak in the master database, and often the NHN will be a very minor summit that is not in the database, so the isolation numbers can be substantially higher than they really are for many peaks.
In particular, isolation distances that are calculated for peaks will be greatly overstated if the true nearest higher peak is not in the database.

It also made me want an isolation tank of my very own - yes, they're commercially available - but my parents weren't about to shell out for one.
In the 1950s and 60s a series of pioneering isolation tank experiments were conducted by John C. Lilly at the National Institutes of Health.

Derek Gatherer: Identifying cases of social contagion using memetic isolation
The degree of geographical isolation of 17 categories of postulated cultural traits in an ethnographic data set of 863 societies is then examined, and compared with the simulations, using z-tests.
This paper examines memetic isolation, that is the situation in which any cultural trait of a society is different to the corresponding mutually exclusive cultural trait, the 'allomeme' (Durham 1991), of any of its surrounding cultures.
Since the simulation demonstrates the range of tendencies to isolation achievable over a range of parameters for transmission within and between societies, as well as migration, the observed memetic isolation in a large dataset may be used to predict the relative contributions of horizontal and familial acquisition for those traits, and the possible selective conditions.

Other products used to “isolate” or “damp” the entire concrete slab, or wood sub floor are one-size-fits-all, moderately rated solutions that at best barely meet the HUD standards for public housing.

What read committed isolation does not do is prevent other transactions from from changing the same data at the same time the data is already being held by another transaction.
This is the most restrictive isolation level available, and not a commonly used level of isolation, because it is also referred to as “the perfect transaction”, and perfect transactions just aren’t always the best choice.
Snapshot isolation is an optimistic locking approach to the pessimistic locking schemes of read committed and serializable isolation levels.

In an isolation transformer the output winding will be isolated, or floating from earth ground unless bonded at the time of installation.
Shielded isolation transformers have all the feature of the standard isolation transformers plus it also incorporates a full metallic shield (This shield is usually copper or aluminum) between the primary and secondary windings.
When more than one shielded isolation transformer is installed between the source and the load, this is referred to as "cascading" and vastly improves power quality.

Introduction to Server and Domain Isolation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The logical isolation approach using server and domain isolation techniques enables the development of a flexible, scalable, and manageable isolation solution that provides the security of isolation without the cost or inflexibility of physical boundaries.
Although logical isolation cannot be considered an antivirus defense on its own, it can be part of a broader antivirus solution, because it provides an additional layer of security that can reduce the likelihood of an attack and minimize its scope should one occur.
The goal of logical isolation is to allow the internal network to be segmented and isolated to support a higher level of security without requiring hard physical boundaries.
