  ISOLINUX - SYSLINUX for CD-ROMs
ISOLINUX is a boot loader for Linux/i386 that operates off ISO 9660/El Torito CD-ROMs in "no emulation" mode.
ISOLINUX is by default built in two versions, one version with extra debugging messages enabled.
ISOLINUX supports the use of so-called "CD-ROM boot sectors", which are used primarily by Microsoft Windows NT (including 2000 and XP.) "CD-ROM boot sectors" need to end in the extension

Mount the CD and copy all files from the isolinux/ directory to /root/livecd/isolinux/ and the kernel you want to use from kernels/ to the /root/livecd/kernels/ directory.
At this point isolinux and the system are ready to be used.
Isolinux does not need floppy emulations, so the "-no-emul-boot" parameter is also specified.

Syslinux or Isolinux - DSL Wiki
The reason Knoppix and the other derivatives went with 'isolinux' (dsl-1.4.iso), is that there is no single floppy size limitation.
The isolinux version has many more drivers to support booting from newer computers.
That is why we say if you cannot boot from the isolinux version, try the syslinux version.

isolinux: Failed to locate CD-ROM device; boot failed. - Knoppix.net   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
Accordring to my google search, the isolinux bootloader is failing but it is that PCs HW (probably the BIOS) that is making it fail.
The first line of the error message refers to spec packet; the "spec" packet is information from the CD-ROM that tells the system what make it is, what speed, etc. The fact that the loader can't grok that indicates that the BIOS does something weird with it.
To have this choice is sometimes useful however as ISOLINUX is vulnerable to BIOS bugs, in which case it's handy to be able to boot using SYSLINUX.

 ISOLINUX/SYSLINUX splash image mini-HOWTO
Isolinux by H. Peter Anvin is one of a family of nifty gadgety bootloaders - the original ancestor is maybe syslinux, there are brothers called memboot and pxeboot.
Isolinux is using color index number 7 for the basic text color - so we need to make sure that our pistacchia will be at index 7 in the table.
As a result, the true ISO9660 name was different and Isolinux couldn't find the Joliet-compliant name that I was referring to in my boot.msg.

Isolinux requires the ISO image to be built in a special way.
If it doesn't work (which will happen, if Windows' bootloader (this 2048 large bin file) is not able to handle isolinux.bin), you have to build the ISO image completely based on isolinux.

For instance, it will surely have the following four files-isolinux.bin (the bootloader binary file), isolinux.cfg (the file which contains all the configurations and settings), miniroot.gz (this file has a preliminary ramfs image which has the file called linuxrc that is responsible for the 'init' process), and vmlinuz (the Linux kernel file).
Next, one by one copy the miniroot and vmlinuz file from each distro's isolinux folder to the /dvdroot/isolinux folder and rename them so that you can identify which miniroot.gz and vmlinuz file belongs to which distro.
You can call it whatever you want but remember that the name should not exceed eight characters and the extension should not exceed three characters else isolinux won't be able to recognize the files while booting.

Isolinux Problem - The CD Forum
Then i copied the folders "images"; "isolinux" and "kernel" from the c't bootcd folder "boot" in the folder "ct".
Therfore is logic that isolinux first find the isolinux.cfg in the folder "boot", that belongs to knoppix.
It isn't a problem with isolinux, Knoppix's initrd is hard linked to folder knoppix, you cant have two knoppixes on one cd.

Ultimate Boot CD :: View topic - Integrating UBCD into multiboot DVD using isolinux
Integrating CDs using the "no emulation" boot method to your multiboot CD (or DVD) should be no problem in case the boot loader of such a CD has the size specified in the boot catalog.
This is the case for CDShell, Microsoft's bootable CDs etc., but it is not the case for CDs using isolinux such as KNOPPIX (the isolinux boot loader is larger than the 2048 bytes loaded by the bios on boot and it needs some special care to find the rest of its code).
It is possible to create a multiboot DVD with KNOPPIX (or another CD using isolinux) _and_ KNOPPIX showing up with its own boot loader when selecting it in the menu of the primary boot loader.
