First World War.com - Battles - The Battles of the Isonzo, 1915-17
The battles of the Isonzo were so-named because they were fought along the Isonzo River on the eastern sector of the Italian Front between June 1915 and November 1917.
The only practical area for Italian military operations during the war (the rest of the mountainous 400-mile length of the Front being almost everywhere dominated by Austro-Hungarian forces), the Austrians had taken due care to fortify the mountains ahead of the Italians' long-expected entry into the war on 23 May 1915.
Despite the huge effort and resources poured into the continuing Isonzo struggle the results were invariably disappointing and without real tactical merit, particularly given the geographic difficulties that were inherent in the campaign.

Not well known in the West, the battles of Isonzo were nevertheless ferocious, and compiled a record of bloodletting that totaled over 1.75 million for both sides.
In sharp contrast to claims that neither the Italian nor the Austrian armies were viable fighting forces, Schindler aims to bring the terrible sacrifices endured by both armies back to their rightful place in the history of 20th century Europe.

The Eleven Battles of the Isonzo
On the Isonzo, all of this meant that in 1916 Italy needed to continue attacking and Austria-Hungary needed to continue defending.
The Tenth and Eleventh Isonzo Battles of 1917, therefore, are keys to understanding the collapse of the Italian army that followed at Caporetto.
Nevertheless, after the success of the 6th Battle of the Isonzo when Gorizia was captured, this effort was the most impressive military achievement by the Italian Army on the Isonzo.

We must remember the Slovenian poets and writers rethinking their feelings of Isonzo, the charm of its cliffs, the mysterious color of its water carried in the soul of its people and history.
In the narrow region of the Isonzo, an opalescent green, the nude fields lay under the sunset, luxuriant and inviolate, in a network of strong golden rays; the beauty of our land hurt more than the blows of Italian grenades".

Schindler begins with a brief description of the topography of the Isonzo Valley and the twists and turns of Italian foreign policy that led it from decades of membership in the Triple Alliance to neutrality in 1914 to belligerency on the Entente side and a declaration of war against Austria-Hungary on 23 May 1915.
From there Schindler goes into great detail covering all of the battles on the Isonzo front, the last of which was the most famous, the Twelfth Battle, known as Caporetto to the Italians and Karfreit to the Austro-Hungarians.
Isonzo presents a solid case that this was especially true of the Italian commander in chief, Luigi Cardona.
