In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

The center of the Isotelus hypostoma is often found separated from the two lobes.
The pygidium, or "tail section" of the Isotelus is one contiguous plate.
The Isotelus fragments shown are from the collections of the Dry Dredgers, an association of amateur geologists and fossil follectors.

 Trilobites
Articulated specimens are uncommon in most exposures, as it was not as robust as Isotelus gigas or Flexicalymene senaria found in the same rocks.
Small Isotelus gigas, particularly those under 50mm long, often have genal spines but these are lost as the trilobite became larger.
Thus, the adult Isotelus iowensis has long genal spines, extending to the fifth, sixth, or seventh segment, an axial lobe a little less than half the width of the thorax, and pygidia show a fairly convex axial lobe, and traces of ribs on the pleural lobes.

Largest Trilobites   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Below, depicted in scale alongside a familiar object, are some of the largest recorded specimens: Isotelus rex, the largest known species of trilobite, at nearly three quarters of a meter in length (720 mm), was found in Canada recently in a nearly complete state, and can be seen at the Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg.
Isotelus rex is a moderately effaced asaphid trilobite lacking terminal spines or prolongations, and the holotype specimen was found in a carbonate unit showing little evidence of distortion or compaction.
Prior to the discovery of the 720 mm Isotelus rex, the largest confirmed complete trilobite specimen was a fully articulated isoteline measuring 430 mm in length (Whittington in Kaesler, 1997).

Ohio State Fossil   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Ohio's state fossil, the trilobite Isotelus, is among the largest trilobites known.
Although over 20,000 species of trilobites are known, Isotelus was a predatory giant among its fellows, crawling along the sea floor in search of smaller creatures to feed on.
A partial specimen of a large specimen of Isotelus was discovered during a geological survey of Ohio in 1837-38.

Isotelus maximus, also called Isotelus metistos, was founded by John Locke near the southwestern corner of Ohio.
Locke collected only the pygidium (tail) of the this species but by proportional comparison, he estimated the complete size of this trilobite of about 21 inches in length.
The fossil was found in 1919 by workmen digging a tunned during the construction of the Huffman Dam.

 GeoFact No. 05, Ohio Trilobites
Isotelus maximus is among the largest known trilobites and was named the State Invertebrate Fossil of Ohio in 1985.
Isotelus, the state fossil, is common in Ordovician rocks in the Cincinnati area; however, most specimens are fragmentary and complete specimens are rare.
All species of Isotelus are characterized by a low, flat profile, smooth cephalon and pygidium, eight thoracic segments, and a broad axial lobe.

GeoFact No. 06, Isotelus: Ohio's State Fossil
With the signing of this bill, Isotelus joined Ohio's other official state symbols, which include the ladybug (insect), red carnation (flower), flint (gemstone), cardinal (bird), white-tail deer (animal), tomato juice (beverage), and of course, the state tree, the buckeye.
Isotelus is known from rocks of Ordovician age, about 504 to 438 million years ago.
Perhaps the most famous Isotelus specimen was discovered in 1919 by workmen digging an outlet tunnel during the construction of the Huffman Dam on the Mad River northeast of Dayton.

 Isotelus mafritzi
The very first trilobites had spiny tails in which most or all of the tail segments were individually covered in outer shell material.
Isotelus represents one of the later trends in trilobite evolution; simplifying the outer shell or "exoskeleton".
Many later trilobites, including Isotelus, had an outer shell with the tail segments combined into one large, smooth tail shield or "pygidium".

One of the main characteristic of the Isotelus brachycephalus is the genal spines curve outward which separates it from the more common Isotelus maximus.

Large representatives of Isotelus occur elsewhere in the Late Ordovician succession of North America and some of the earliest described species were considered to be among the biggest trilobites then known.
