  Azriel Hildesheimer Summary
HILDESHEIMER, ESRIEL (1820–1899), was a German rabbi and founder of the Orthodox Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin.
Hildesheimer was born in Halberstadt, Germany, and was educated in the first Orthodox school in Germany to include secular subjects in its curriculum.
Hildesheimer was born in Hildesheim, a small town near Hanover, Germany (although some believe he was born in Halberstadt), the son of Rabbi Löb Glee Hildesheimer.

There, on Israel’s Memorial Day, an invitation was extended to Rabbi Michael Boyden to chant the traditional Jewish prayer in memory of those soldiers who had sacrificed their lives in defense of the state.
Rabbi Esriel Hildesheimer — then head of an Orthodox yeshiva in Eisenstadt, Hungary, and later destined to become founder of the Orthodox Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin — did not hesitate to condemn these youth for their actions, and he stated that such a deed constituted an act of hillul hashem, a “profanation of God’s name.”
The precedent offered by Hildesheimer is consistent with the religious stance put forth by the late Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik, who asserted that all Jews, regardless of religious denomination, share in a “covenant of common destiny.” The words and deeds of these great Orthodox leaders should motivate my Orthodox sisters and brothers to speak out now.

Dilemmas of modern orthodoxy: sociological and philosophical. - HighBeam Encyclopedia
Ironically, although Hildesheimer was the founder, against Hirsch's wishes, of the first Orthodox rabbinical seminary in Germany to incorporate modern Jewish studies in its curriculum, his approach to general knowledge was very different from that of Hirsch.
Hildesheimer was the pragmatist rather than the philosopher, and advocated secular studies alongside, but clearly not synthesized with, Torah, and only as a concession to the needs of the day.(12)
And, ironically, although Hildesheimer was not an advocate of a synthesis between religious learning and worldly knowledge, if one looks at the broad range of his thought and activities, he emerges as a much more accurate model than Hirsch of what Yeshiva University and Modern Orthodoxy do actually represent.

As his responsum indicates, Rabbi Hildesheimer was most sympathetic to the rabbinic warrants Rabbi Ottensosser had marshaled to support his conclusion that the practice of publicizing the names and amounts of donors and their donations was unacceptable.
In light of the principle found in Horayot 10b, Rabbi Hildesheimer felt justified in exercising his discretionary powers as a rabbinic authority to issue a decision authorizing leniency on this matter, for through the maintenance of this practice additional funds could be raised for positive charitable purposes.
