While the developer gathered input from local residents, in the end the decision to move ahead was a political one, based on the project's design and type: It wasn't a typical CSD.
Issaquah Highlands will draw residents with its compact fabric and walking-distance amenities, but it has a few other tricks up its sleeve, too.

While galloping growth has brought many changes in once-sleepy Issaquah, there are still a few reminders of the quieter rural atmosphere that attracted many residents here.
Davis, who has acreage south of town, says she moved here in 1971 "so I could raise my kids in a rural setting" and not have to commute too many miles to her job at the Port of Seattle, where she worked until retirement three years ago.
While friendly people and rural atmosphere rank at the top of her list of Issaquah's attributes, traffic is at the top of her list of its drawbacks.
