Issyk Kul is vast and I knew that a two-day visit wouldn't be enough to form an accurate impression of the lake and its environs.
My original goal, when I hoped I planned to visit Issyk Kul in August, had been to go scuba diving in the lake and perhaps see some of the traces of these lost cities.
I was intrigued by the tales I had heard of drowned cities such as the ancient town of Chi-gu, built by a tribe driven from China by the Huns, and destroyed sometime after the 5th century.

In the summer Issyk Kul is a favourite attraction for tourists from both Kyrgyzstan and other former Soviet republics.
Through a mountain pass at the northern end of the high plateau the horse track goes down to Lake Issyk Kul and the village of Bokonbaevo, where many of the herdsmen live in the winter.
Only a handful of herdsmen spend the winter in the high mountains to look after the yak bulls, which are both unhappy and liable to become ill in the lowlands, and also to attend to buildings, machines and other equipment.
