Although the league established itself as one of the strongest leagues in the country, routinely providing the winners of the FA Amateur Cup, it was still seen as being at a lower level than the Southern League and Northern Premier League, the top regional semi-professional leagues.
Two Isthmian clubs, Enfield and Dagenham, defected to the APL in 1981, but it was not until 1985 that the Isthmian League champions were given a promotion place to the newly renamed Football Conference.
The Isthmian League was reduced back down to three divisions, and its boundaries were changed to remove the overlap with the Southern League.

It has been at the sixth tier of the English football league system since 1985 but will be at the seventh starting in 2004-2005.
Next season, the Football Conference is expanding by adding North and South divisions, which means that the Isthmian League Premier Division will be displaced a level and lie below the Conference's new divisions.

The fire which totally destroyed the stand in the 1991-1992 season failed to dampen the enthusiasm which now prevailed and for 1992-1993 a new complex was built to include a 200 seat capacity stand, a toilet block with facilities for the disabled, turnstiles, in-ground refreshment facilities and an ambulance bay.

After 24 seasons in Division Two, the club changed its name to Hastings Town in 1976 and, after a further four seasons in Division Two were promoted to Division One as champions in 1979/80.
In 1999 the club resigned from the Southern League with the intention of moving across to the Isthmian (and the prospect of less travelling).
However, they subsequently changed their mind and despite finishing 5th in the Premier Division had to reapply and were placed in the Eastern Division - effectively a relegation.
