Istria - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The Croatian word for the Istrians is Istrani, or Istrijani, the latter being in the local čakavian dialect.
In Istrian contexts, for example, the word "Italian" can just as easily refer to a descendant of immigrants from Sicily during the Mussolini period as it can refer to autochthonous speakers of the Venetian or Istriot language whose antecedents in the region extend back to the inception of the Venetian Republic.
Similarly, national powers claim Istrian Slavs according to local language, so that speakers of Čakavian and Štokavian dialects of Croatian language are considered to be Croatians (or Serbs depending on personal affiliation, these numbers are none the less small), while speakers of Kajkavian may be considered to be Slovenians.

 About Istrian wirehair
In the rennaisance frescoes in old Istrian churches, such dogs, company of hunters, were often represented along the colorful pallette of contemporary characters in the "Danse Macabre" scenes, a very popular theme in late middle ages.
In other words, Istrian Wirehair is somewhat more advanced along the process of domestification, which can be a good thing or not - domestification may also bring less resistance to diseases, smaller litter sizes etc, but happily this had not sprung up (yet?) in our breed.
In Istria no records of Istrian hounds were kept for a while as the province was during this time (between the two wars) under Italian jurisdiction.

It can also refer to Istrian Slavs who adopted the veneer of Italian culture as they moved from rural to urban areas, or from the farms into the bourgeoisie.

Istrian Italians were pretty much afraid — but not afraid, I would say, they didn’t like fascism, Mussolini, and they did revolt before — sometimes more openly like in coal mines, Labin coal mines in 1921 when they took it over, sometimes more quietly.
Point F´ within the Yugoslav Istrian account also relates to those Istrians who left, but because these actions are embedded within a plot that de-emphasizes violence, the meaning of this narrative sequence is transformed from evidence of victimization to evidence of guilt or panic among those who left.
This approach to Istrian victimization stands in sharp contrast to the Italian Istrian narrative, where all perpetrators of violence are duplicitous Slavs from Istria.
