The Istrian Sheepdog is obviously a close relative to the Sheepdogs of Sparta, Romania and the Eastern Balkans generally.
Istrian Sheepdogs are reserved and cautious of strangers, but are more lively and affectionate than most flock guards.
The Istrian short and long-hair herding dogs are related breeds, while the second only differs from the first in its coat being longer and its hairs having deeper roots, while it also has a sturdier constitution and physical build.

 Uniqueness in the heart of Europe - Karst Sheepdog
In 1968 the Karst sheepdog was again registered, this time as the Karst Shepherd - Krasski ovccar.
Krasski ovccar is mentioned and praised for his qualities as early as 17th century by J.W. Valvasor in his definitive work on Slovenian lands and people, the Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (1687).
Professor Strebel reports three breeds of sheepdogs, among them the so-called Pompeian shepherd, from whom the Swiss shepherd, the Karst shepherd and the German Rotweiler have descended.

Also known as the Krasky Ovcar or the Karst Sheepdog, the Istrian Sheepdog is a flock guardian that is most often found in Slovenia.
The Istrian Sheepdog originates in Slovenia and is from the Istrian Peninsula, in the northeast corner of the Adriatic Sea.
They are relatively rare outside of this environment, and they are usually kept by shepherds in the mountains of the peninsula.
