Topic: Isuzu Yamada

Isuzu Yamada - Films as actress:
Born: Mitsu Yamada in Osaka, 5 February 1917; daughter of the actor Kusuo Yamada.
Still a teenager, but an actor's daughter, Isuzu Yamada began her career as a period film star at the Nikkatsu Studio in 1930.
Although Yamada, in a prolific professional career, played various roles for many directors including Ichikawa, Kobayashi, Kawashima, Shibuya and Shinoda, her most memorable postwar roles are those of the ex-wife in Toyoda's comedy, A Man, a Cat and Two Women, and of the weary brothel owner in Naruse's Flowing.

Starring Kurosawa's longtime collaborator Toshiro Mifune and the legendary Isuzu Yamada as his ruthless wife, the film tells of a valiant warrior's savage rise to power and his ignominious fall.

Isuzu Yamada is tremendous as the tough heroine condemned by society for behavior that would have been tolerated if she were a man.
While this can be said for many other large cities as well, this opening displays many of the disparities within the film especially those dealing with the poor and the rich and, of course this being a Mizoguchi film, those between men and women.
However, instead of being a young geisha, Yamada's character Murai Ayako is a telephone girl at a large pharmaceutical company.

 Sound Politics: Jose Isuzu?
ISUZU must be a fairly new surname since there is none listed in the U.S. Federal Census, 1850 - 1930 or any of the other older databases.
One may have to be a certain age to remember Joe Isuzu, but one doesn't have to be my age to recognize that Jose and Isuzu are not likely combinations of ethnic names, especially since Isuzu is the name of a car company.
Isuzu is a Japanese given name for a girl (e.g., the great actress Isuzu Yamada, though that's actually a stage name).

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Tsuruhachi and Tsurujiro
Cast: Kazuo Hasegawa, Isuzu Yamada, Kamatari Fujiwara, Heihachiro Okawa and Masao Mishima.
The film's many musical sequences, well-composed though they are, lack the thematic depth of Naruse's best work with the form—rather than illuminating and/or counterpointing each character's unique inner state (as in that masterpiece to come, The Song Lantern), they instead encourage our considerably blind adulation of Tsuruhachi and Tsurujiro.
(Toward this point, it is especially difficult to delineate the line that separates the adoring onscreen audience from its doting offscreen counterpart.) With stars like this, though, it is almost silly and most certainly futile to complain: Yamada and Hasegawa have the sort of sacrosanct chemistry that creates its own kind of insight and profundity.

The Lower Depths featuring Toshiro Mifune & Isuzu Yamada Movie and DVD page on ARTISTdirect
Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa transferred the setting of Maxim Gorky's play The Lower Depths from Imperial Russia to his own country's Edo Period--which, like Gorky's 19th-century setting, was an era of great cultural advances, offset by the miseries of those who weren't in the aristocracy.
Kurosawa's film concentrates on Toshiro Mifune, playing a crooked gambler who falls in love with the sister (Kyoko Kagawa) of his cruel landlady (Isuzu Yamada).
Herself carrying a torch for Mifune, the landlady exacts a roundabout revenge by killing her own husband and pinning the blame on the gambler.

The shift to Japanese settings is seamless, creating a historically accurate and resonant work with a culturally distinct visual style.
The supporting performances also recall Japanese tradition, particularly Isuzu Yamada's creepily unemotional take on Lady Macbeth, while Mifune proves consistently gripping in the sheer intensity of his performance.
The intelligence of Kurosawa's alterations retains the drama's tragic impact, especially during the conclusion, in which Washizu makes a memorable final stand against an advancing army.

Kurosawa creates a brilliant spectrum of characters who differ from one another in degrees of hope, resignation, and compassion: the landlady (Isuzu Yamada) in love with a thief, the thief (Toshiro Mifune, Rashomon) spurned by the landlady's sister, the gambler, the prostitute, and many others.
Through their interactions, Kurosawa explores illusion and delusion, delighting in each person's ability to create an image of himself that doesn't match reality.

DVD Empire - Item - Akira Kurosawa's Throne Of Blood: The Criterion Collection / DVD-Video
One of the most celebrated screen adaptations of Shakespeare, Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood reimagines Macbeth in feudal Japan.
Starring Kurosawa's longtime collaborator Toshiro Mifune and the legendary Isuzu Yamada as his ruthless wife, the film tells the tale of a valiant warrior's savage rise to power and his ignominious fall.
With Throne of Blood, Kurosawa fuses one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies with the formal elements of Japanese Noh Theater to make a Macbeth that is all its own-a classic tale of ambition and duplicity set against a ghostly landscape of fog and inescapable doom.
