Itaipu (Guarani: Itaipu, Portuguese: Itaipu, Spanish: Itaipú; pronounced [itaj'pu]) is a dam of the Paraná River that includes a hydroelectric power plant, located on the border between Brazil and Paraguay.
The maximum flow of the Itaipu's spillway is 62.2 thousand cubic metres per second, it is equivalent to 40 times the average flow of the Iguazu Falls.
The volume of excavation of earth and rock in Itaipu is 8.5 times greater than that of the Euro Tunnel and the volume of concrete is 15 times greater.

ITAIPU Binacional is the entity created and owned in equal proportions by both countries to build and operate the hydroelectric complex.
In 1998, Itaipu generated 87.268 GWh, of which 95.2% were assigned to Brazil, accounting for 25% of the Brazilian market requirements and 4.8% to Paraguay, accounting for 79% of the Paraguayan market requirements.
Currently, Itaipu still devotes a huge effort and significant amounts of financial resources to carrying out environmental protection programs, ranging from reforestation of damaged areas to preservation of the quality of water in the reservoir.

Located at the Brazilian-Paraguaian border and not far from the Argentinian border, the first step of the initiation was already in 1966 when the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Brazil and Paraguay signed a joint statement known as the "Act of Ygazu".
On April, 26, 1973, the two gouvernments of the states signed a treaty "for the development of the hydroelectric resources of the Parana River" and founded "ITAIPU Binacional" (a cooperation with the legal, administrative and financial capacities and technical responsibility to plan, set up and operate the plant) in May, 17, 1974.
A 12 800 000 m³ of concrete was used for the project ITAIPU.
