Also in Zulia but north of Maracaibo, the interesting Sinamaica Lagoon is a community of Paraujano and Añu Indians descendants that still live in houses built on palafitos or stilts, some of them yet built traditionally with estera, a kind of mat made from reed available in the shallow shores.
The lagoon is famous for giving the country its denomination when Alonso de Ojeda and Americo Vespucci compared it to Venice in 1499 and named the whole region as Little Venice, or Venezuela.

The mechanisms of spot division by artisanal fishers to determine the use of the marine space by fishers from Itaipu Beach, Niterói, and Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, are illustrated in Fig.
However, the government’s proposal to create a maritime extractive reserve at Itaipu Beach, which was rejected by local fishers and by the local association, illustrates a coastal case in which there is a viable local organization, including the first president elected by the Colônia de Pescadores (Barbosa et al.
The robustness of this stability is evident in the fact that the location of the spots did not move, in spite of technological changes at Valença, Bahia, e.g., a switch from fishing with the rede de calão to the increased use of the redinha for catching shrimp.

The numerous geysers, boiling mud pools, thermal baths and Licancabur volcano (5960 m/19549 ft), which looms just behind the lagoon, are clear evidence of the region's volcanic activity.
