The Italian Basketball Federation on Friday announced that Andrea Bargnani will not play for Italy at the FIBA World Championship in Japan.
The Italians, who needed a wild card to play in Japan, announced they would rest many of their senior players this summer, including Massimo Bulleri, captain Giacomo Galanda and Roberto Chiacig.
While the Italian Basketball Federation has decided to hold off on using Bargnani this summer, it has already targeted dates to use the 20-year-old in the future.

Dino was born in Alano di Piave, in northeast Italy.
On 5 September, 2003 he became the second Italian player to enter Basketball Hall of Fame, after the great player Cesare Rubini, who coached Olimpia Milano between the 1930s and the 1970s.

The move comes after a recent Italian Basketball Federation meeting, where officials decided Virtus Bologna's refusal to honor the contract of guard Sani Becirovic for the 2002-03 season made the club ineligible to compete in the upcoming Italian league season.
Becirovic had asked the Italian Basketball Federation (FIP) to act on his behalf on October 28 after Virtus failed to pay him.
The federal council of the FIP unanimously agreed to cancel Virtus' participation in Serie A next season after the team missed a deadline to pay 1 million euros.
