Some tales listed as Perrault's were in fact adapted from earlier Italian versions by Giambattista Basile, but in turn, some tales published by the Grimm Brothers were originally Perrault's stories.
As to what exactly constitutes a true fairy tale is subject to discussion, as the line between fable, folktale, fairy tale, or myth is often vague.

I might even venture to add that Calvino was more faithful in his reproducing and collating of these tales than the Grimm Brothers ever were, as he does not attempt to whitewash them or change them to fit within a social/partriachal framework.
These are folktales just the way they should be- humorous, magical and just a little off the center.
